The stenciled graffiti caused roughly $1000 in city repairs.
Greenville, NC Police DepartmentFacebookPolice are on the hunt for a man it says was captured on video spray-painting sidewalks with “NASCAR on USA” using stencils in Greenville, North Carolina.
While the video in question has not been released, the Greenville Police Department did release a photo of the man in question standing over one of the stencils. Police say the alleged spraying took place on September 23 and resulted in about $1000 worth of city repairs.
Sidewalk stencil advertising is a common, if not controversial practice amongst big brands. Ads for Justin Bieber’s album Purpose and Amazon Prime logos appeared on several sidewalks in San Fransisco in 2015 and 2019, respectively. Ride-sharing app Lyft has also used sidewalk advertising as a means to push products in 2016. We’ve reached out to NBC Universal, USA’s parent company, for comment on this situation.
In the meantime, if you happen to know anything about the crime in question, Greenville police encourage tipsters to contact Detective Reichstein at 252-329-3471. The department says the first tip that leads to the suspect’s identification could be eligible for a Crime Stoppers award.
