Every car on the road today has to be serviced regularly to keep it running smoothly, with two main types of checkups being minor and major services.
The service needed will depend on the mileage of the vehicle, and usually alternates between minor and major with each interval.
Most modern vehicles have a dedicated warning light in the instrument cluster that notifies the owner when a service is due. The owner’s manual will also stipulate exactly when which service must be performed on your specific model of car.
If your next service is just around the corner, these are the main differences you should be aware of with regards to the scale of the checkups.
Minor service
Minor services, according to MotorHappy, typically include a comprehensive vehicle system and diagnostics check; oil and oil filter change; the inspection of all fluid levels, filter conditions, tubes, and hoses for leaks; and fan belt and brake pad scans.
The operation also encompasses the checking of all lights and tyre pressures.
If there is a specific issue the owner is experiencing, the owner will have to communicate that to the mechanic who will then try to solve the issue in that particular area.
Minor services are generally carried out every 10,000-15,000km and are cheaper than major services.
Major service
A major service is a much more comprehensive type of car maintenance that includes a full inspection of the vehicle.
In addition to the areas covered during a minor checkup, a major service covers the outside of the vehicle, hinges and latches, timing belt, spark plugs and filters, and brake and clutch fluid.
Moreover, the shop replaces the transmission and differential oils, and if necessary, also the wheel bearing grease.

Major car services are normally done around 30,000-45,000km and are the pricier of the two options.
Why servicing is important
A car’s mechanical components suffer from wear and tear over the course of its lifetime and require regular maintenance to ensure it continues working for as many years as possible.
Servicing as per the manual’s recommendations with ensure the car remains as fuel efficient as can be and miniminses the risk of breakdowns and incurring unexpected repair bills.
“Additionally, a car with a full service record is often more valuable than a car without one, because it shows the overall condition of the vehicle, as well as who did the work and when the work was carried out,” said MotorHappy.
“A service history will also show if the car has received any recalls or if any warranty or major repair work was required.”
However, pay attention to the manufacturer’s advice as missing out on any services could void after-sales agreements that are still in place, such as a warranty or service plan.
