Ford GT Heritage Edition
While we have known for a while that 2022 will be the final year of production for the phenomenal Ford GT supercar, nobody was quite sure just how far along we were in the supercar’s limited 1 350 unit production run.
Motor Authority recently confirmed that car number 1 100 has just rolled off the Multimatic production line in Canada, which essentially means that there are just 250 GT’s left for those keen to snap up a guaranteed future classic. While a final production date is yet to be announced, the Ford spokesperson who confirmed this information has also provided additional details regarding the first five second-generation GT Heritage Editions’ build numbers.

Just 27 units of the 2017 GT ’66 Heritage Edition were built, a special edition model which honoured the No. 2 Ford GT40 driven by Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon in their 1966 Le Mans victory. The 2018 GT ’67 Heritage Edition inspired by the GT40 that won Le Mans in 1967 saw just 39 examples being built, and another 50 examples of the 2019 and 2020 Gulf Livery Heritage Editions saw production. And of course, we can’t forget the GT ’66 Daytona Heritage Edition which honoured the GT40 driven by the great Ken Miles at the 1966 24 Hours of Daytona, a model which saw a production run of 50 examples, too.
The 2022 Chicago Auto Show, which took place recently, saw the announcement of another special edition, the Alan Mann Heritage Edition. Ford has confirmed that build slots are available for the latest special edition GT, but they aren’t likely to be unspoken for for particularly long.

As a quick recap, nobody saw the second-generation GT coming when it was announced at the 2015 Detroit Auto show. Just a handful of Ford top brass and the vehicle’s small development team were aware of its existence. Powered by a 3,5-litre twin-turbocharged V6 with up to 485 kW and 745 N.m, all sent to the rear wheels via a Getrag seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.
While it’s very likely to be fully-electric, don’t be surprised if Ford sprout a third-generation GT in the next year or two, featuring all the same tech such as a carbon-fibre monocoque, Gorilla glass windscreen and snazzy floating buttresses.
In the March 2022 issue of CAR, Ryan O’Connor acquaints himself with all three Ford GT’s; the two modern super cars, as well as an original Ford GT40 – on shelves now!
