Is there a bigger car fanatic than Jay Leno? The ex-chat show host has a collection of cars that puts some of the world’s best automotive museums to shame. He possesses some of the most historic vehicles from steam-powered machines to vintage Bugattis, however, Jay is a fan of the new stuff, too. He owns many modern performance cars, but today he’s borrowed one from a friend of his. Clearly a very good friend as it’s a Ferrari SF90.
The Ferrari SF90 is a red car of note for two very good reasons. Firstly, it’s Ferrari’s first series production hybrid, meaning there’s no cap on how many will be produced. Secondly, the supercar is the most potent Ferrari ever made. This plug-in hybrid model is powered by a turbocharged V8 engine and two electric motors. On battery power alone the SF90 can cover 16 miles at speeds of up to 84mph.
As green and clean as this car is, combining its EV potential with that Italian V8 grants the driver some 986bhp and a 0-62mph sprint of just 2.5 seconds via all-wheel drive. A run of 0-124mph is covered in 6.7 seconds, while a top speed in excess of 212mph is possible.
The car weighs 1,570kg with its carbon tub, but the Assetto Fiorano pack shaves 30kg from this figure via more lightweight materials. These cars also get more aggressive tyres, reworked suspension and a reprofiled carbon rear wing.
Jay has borrowed this SF90 from renowned collector David Lee who is one fo the world’s most prolific collectors. He guesses he has around 30 Ferraris, but that number included some of the most special to ever leave Italy. The pair chew the fat and on design before Leno hits the road.
Out on the street Jay remarks upon just how easy it is to drive the SF90 quickly, with the immediate torque from the electric motors taking him by surprise. He also give heavy praise to the chassis for its road holding and feel.
