The Ford Ranger and Toyota Hilux are constantly exchanging the top two positions as most favourite South African bakkie. No matter which you choose to be your traveling companion they will eventually need a new battery within 2-3 years and you can save yourself a trip to your local battery shop and replace yours right at home.
We are going to show you how to do it in a few easy steps with just a few tools and some elbow grease.
You will need:
- New battery
- 10mm, 12mm, 13mm wrenches and socket set (depending on year model)
Let’s get started!
1. Open the bonnet.
2. Using the selection of wrenches, undo and remove the negative battery terminal.
3. Undo and remove the positive battery terminal.
4. Loosen and back off the retaining nuts on the bracket holding the battery in place. Newer models will have a nylon strap.
5. Remove the battery and install the new one.
6. Install bracket bolts, tighten down the bracket, and replace terminals, positive terminal first.
