The Legends & Classic Auction that took place in Johannesburg this past weekend saw a South African-exclusive Alfa Romeo GTV 6 3.0l sell for R1.1 million.
High Street Auctions called it the “biggest vintage and classic car auction of the year in South Africa.”
The annual auction drew a restricted crowd of 150 attendees and a virtual audience of over 15,000 viewers, it said.
Results
On 4 December, 106 cars and motorcycles crossed the auction blocks at the High Street Auctions venue in Johannesburg.
The event featured vehicles from all over the world, including a selection of extremely rare South African-exclusive cars.
The standout sales results for the auction include:
- 1971 Ford Capri Perana – R780,000
- 1970 Mercedes Benz 300 SEL – R800,000
- 1966 Ford Mustang Notchback – R825,000
- 1972 Ford Fairmont GT – R900,000
- 1960 Chevrolet El Camino – R915,000
- 1985 Alfa Romeo GTV 6 3.0l – R1,100,000
“The star lot of the day was, without doubt, the Alfa GTV 6 [pictured above], which was also the last lot in a packed catalogue of some of the rarest collector cars I’ve ever seen,” said a spokesperson for the company.
“[There] was a trans-Atlantic bidding war between collectors in Australia and South Africa, and the bids climbed rapidly from R200,000, with the hammer eventually falling at R1.1 million.”
This Alfa was originally designed for the South African Group 1 racing circuit and will continue to call the country it’s home for the foreseeable future.
“Two other standout lots with fierce international bidding were for a 1958 Chevrolet Apache and a 1953 Mercedes Benz W186 Model 300 Adenauer, both of which achieved sale prices of R600,000.”
Buyers
According to Creative Rides owner Kevin Derrick, 80% of the buyers at the auction were South African – while there were also collectors from England, Australia, Zambia, and Botswana.
Among the South African buyers, the majority were from Gauteng, with the Western Cape represented strongly.
“Numerous bidders also made multiple purchases at the auction, with one very avid local collector snapping up eight cars for his private collection.”
“Several buyers have indicated to us that their purchases this weekend will be going to private car museums across the country.”
