Those looking to add BMW's most compact model, the 1 Series, to their garage will want to know how many kilometres the product will cover before it's no longer financially viable to own.
When it comes down to answering the question of how many kilometres a vehicle can cover, there is a caveat that needs to be addressed. There are technically no limits to how many kilometres a vehicle can cover, provided the owner is willing to pay to have the product fixed each time there is a big maintenance bill. Therefore, when we cover topics that relate to how many kilometres a vehicle can cover, the average mileage that we list is what we see a particular vehicle can cover before the owner needs to consider selling their car.
The 1 Series
The first generation 1 Series was first introduced back in 2004 in E81(3-door) and E87(5-door) guise and was subsequently available in E82 coupe and E87 cabriolet guise. The generation that followed was the F20/F21 which was also the last rear-wheel drive 1 Series before the current F40 generation was introduced with its front-wheel drive architecture. Being the Bavarian brand’s most attainable model, the 1 Series has found success is just about every market in which it has been introduced as consumers look to add a premium marque to their garage for a reasonable amount of money.
What’s on AutoTrader
A quick search on the AutoTrader site reveals nearly 600 1 Series models for sale, with mileage ranging from zero to over 300 000km, however, the vast majority (487 examples) of 1 Series listed at the time of writing has less than 150 000km on their respective odometers. This begs the question, how long will these products last?
How long will your 1 Series last?
Having looked at several ownership forums, various international surveys and BMW specialist websites, the general consensus appears to be that between 240 000 and 320 000km is entirely possible from a 1 Series, provided that it is maintained properly and driven reasonably by its owner. There will always be exceptions to this, with some models lasting far fewer kilometres and others being able to cover a great deal more. We would be confident stating that the more performance-oriented models will generally not last as long as the ‘regular’ 1 Series models as these products tend to be driven harder and are generally exposed to more wear and tear.
