VW’s high-performance EV range to expand with Tesla Model S, Hyundai IONIQ 6 N competitor
The 2024 Volkswagen ID.7 GTX has been previewed ahead of the high-performance battery-electric sports sedan’s unveiling at the Munich motor show in September.
Set to lock horns with the upcoming Hyundai IONIQ 6 N, the GTX will be the flagship model of the incoming new Volkswagen ID.7 range, which was recently unveiled with a new single-motor/rear-drive powertrain and a 77kWh battery that provides up to 700km range.
The ID.7, including the sizzling GTX, is expected to arrive Down Under from around 2026 as Volkswagen Australia moves towards its goal of selling more EVs than internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles by 2028.
Before then, the company has committed to launching the Volkswagen ID.3 hatch and ID.4 and ID.5 SUVs in 2024, followed by the Volkswagen ID. Buzz and ID. Buzz Cargo in 2025.

“Were absolutely interested in every ID vehicle, including the high-performance GTX models,” said Volkswagen Group Australia’s head of communications, Paul Pottinger.
“We’ve started the conversation about ID.7 [with head office in Germany] and we would see that as part of the portfolio in Australia.”
The third member of the GTX family after the ID.4 and ID.5 GTX models, Volkswagen says the ID.7 GTX will pack a twin-motor/all-wheel drive powertrain bringing more power along with uprated (adaptive) suspension and brakes, a sportier exterior design, a lower, road-hugging stance and a dynamic interior fit-out.
The smaller Volkswagen ID.5 GTX bangs out 220kW from its twin-motor layout, but we’d expect the flagship ID.7 GTX to pump out considerably more power.
Volkswagen’s teaser images don’t give much away about the design, save for its red-on-black colour motif and GTX lettering on the front doors.
VW says it’ll get lots of black gloss exterior accents along with a black roof and heavily tinted windows.
The headlights and tail-lights are similar to regular ID.7 models, but you can bet your bottom dollar it’ll feature an aerodynamic sports body kit – such a rear spoiler, a larger, lower front bumper and side skirts – to improve high-speed stability and add an extra dose of visual aggression.
No cabin shots have been posted yet but VW has confirmed the interior will include “red GTX contrast stitching on the seats, dash panel and doors emphasise the sportiness of the model”.
