Ford Australia has laid bare details on its crucial 2022 Ranger line-up, which will be available with a choice of four engines including a 3.0-litre turbo-diesel V6 first seen on the Everest.
As previously reported, the flagship Ranger Raptor scores a potent 292kW/583Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6, but this time around, Wildtrak, Sport and XLT buyers won’t miss out on a brawny powertrain thanks to the aforementioned diesel V6.
Outputs are pegged at 184kW/600Nm, matching the mechanically related Everest large SUV, and handily outmuscling the outgoing Ranger Raptor’s 157kW/500NM 2.0-litre bi-turbo-diesel engine.
Speaking of, the 2.0-litre bi-turbo-diesel engine does make a return in the 2022 Ranger line-up, but tuned to just 154kW/500Nm and is available across each grade barring the Raptor.
With the removal of the 147kW/470Nm 3.2-litre turbo-diesel five-cylinder engine, the 2.0-litre bi-turbo engine becomes the most ubiquitous powertrain in the 2022 Ranger line-up, offered on the XL, XLS, XLT, Sport and Wildtrak variants.
At the bottom rung of the power ladder however, is a single-turbo version of the 2.0-litre diesel engine with outputs pegged at 125kW/405Nm – which still outpunches the 118kW/385Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine it replaces – and is available exclusively to XL variants.
All engines barring the base powertrain are paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, with the exception of the base powertrain that comes with a six-speed automatic unit.
It is believed manual versions of the new Ranger will be made available too, but Ford is yet to fully detail the shift-it-yourself workhorse.
Towing capacity for all diesel engines are pegged at 3500kg, while the top-spec 3.0-litre twin-turbo petrol V6 can haul up to 2500kg.
Both the diesel and petrol V6 engines also score an automatic start/stop system as standard to keep the yet-to-be-revealed fuel economy figures as low as possible.
Of course, a mix of single-, super- and dual-cab styles are on offer, as well as cab-chassis and pick-up bodies, spread across 4×4 and 4×2 options, but Ford Australia is yet detail pricing for its 2022 Ranger line-up.
Standard equipment includes LED tail-lights, blacked-out grille, 16-inch steel wheels, fabric interior trim, an 8.0-inch digital instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch Sync4 multimedia screen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and single-zone climate control.
Stepping up to the XLS adds selectable drive modes, exterior side steps, front fog lamps and 16-inch alloy wheels.
The XLT meanwhile, picks up rear disc brakes, body-coloured door handles and side-view mirrors, a tow bar, chrome-accented front grille, LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, in-built satellite navigation and digital radio, leather-wrapped steering wheel and shifter, keyless entry, and push-button start.
Pick-up versions of the XLT also come with a black sports bar, rear box illumination and a bedliner.
Sport buyers are treated to grey exterior highlights, a front skid plate, 18-inch alloy wheels, a wireless smartphone charger and leather-accented seats with power adjustability up front.
The 2022 Ranger Wildtrak meanwhile, is fitted with a unique grille design, puddle lamps, roof rails, aluminium load box with tie-down points, unique 18-iunch wheels, power roller shutter, interior ambient lighting, pull-out cupholders, heated front seats and a 12.0-inch multimedia touchscreen.
Finally, the top-dog Raptor is fitted with an active exhaust, LED foglights, Matrix LED headlights, a unique grille, a spray-in bedliner, 17-inch wheels wrapped in all-terrain tyres, a 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster and paddle shifters.
For safety, each 2022 Ranger is equipped with nine airbags, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist, lane departure warning and cross-traffic alert, while all pick-up body styles also pick up a reversing camera and rear parking sensors.
From the XLS grade up, front parking sensors are included as standard, while the XLT and up scores automatic wipers and adaptive cruise control, and the Wildtrak and Raptor add a surround-view camera and automated parking.
Order books for the 2022 Ranger open next month, with full pricing details expected to be revealed before then.
