In November of 2022, Genesis, as our Nicholas Maronese so eloquently worded it, “[dropped the] top on the X Concept with stunning Convertible.” Now, the elegant and gorgeous concept is moving forward and allegedly going into production—kinda, maybe. I’ll explain.
At Genesis’ annual dealer meeting Luc Donckerwolke, the brand’s chief creative officer, apparently announced the X Convertible is going on sale. “When he said that at the dealer meeting — to say it in front of a couple of hundred Genesis dealers — that’s a pretty good sign,” is how Peter Lanzavecchia, the chairman of the Genesis National Dealer Advisory Council, put it to Automotive News.
So it’s happening, right? Ummmm— A Genesis spokesperson, when reached for comment, replied with “Thank you for reaching out. We cannot confirm future product plans at this time.” So it’s not happening—but maybe it is? But there’s no confirmation… yet.
Lanzavecchia also told Automotive News “I don’t know if it’s going to be over $200,000 or $300,000, but I guarantee we’re going see a lot of Bentley Continental convertible trade-ins on that when it comes to our showrooms.”
The Genesis X ‘vert, when and if it goes into production, would be a “halo” car for Genesis, meaning units sold would be low, but that the car would be more geared toward showcasing what the brand is capable of, and what technologies could trickle down into other offerings.
The X Convertible had a fancy folding hard-top, and, when closed, showed off a transparent moonroof that still gave occupants a look at the sky. Interestingly, that’s what the Ioniq Concept Seven illustrated at the 2023 Montreal Auto Show, too.
Subscribe to our newsletter and you’ll be in the know when the X opens up for ordering. If it does.
