Ford has unveiled the new Explorer Timberline in the US.
The Explorer Timberline is the “most off-road-capable Explorer ever” said Ford, thanks to a range of improved features.
These include:
- Increased ground clearance
- Improved approach and departure angles
- Steel skid plates
- Torsen limited-slip differential
- Bridgestone Dueler all-terrain tires
- New shocks, springs, and stabilizer bars
The company said that the vehicle also packs a functional touch, with three rows of seating and LED fog lamps for lighting up the edges of roads or trails at night.
Additionally, Ford’s Co-Pilot 360 system is included as standard, which provides adaptive cruise control, speed sign recognition, steering assist, and a 360-degree camera which produces a view of obstacles around the vehicle.
“Consumer data has shown us that now more than ever, customers want to get outside and explore nature with friends and family,” said Ford about the SUV’s launch.
“Timberline hits a new sweet spot with these customers who want an ideal combination of passenger space, moderate off-road capability, and great manners around town.”
Engine and power
Powering the Explorer Timberline is a 2.3-litre Ford EcoBoost engine, which produces 223kW and 420Nm.
“For customers who need to tow RVs, ATVs, and boats to their adventures, the standard Class III Trailer Tow Package brings [2,400kg] of towing capability,” said Ford.
This power is sent to an intelligent four-wheel drive system which automatically adjusts torque between the wheels, “based on conditions and driver inputs to deliver the best traction”.
Ford has also included a Terrain Management System which features seven drive modes, along with hill descent control.
Putting down the power to the ground are Bridgestone Dueler 265/65 R18 tyres, said the company.
The 2021 Ford Explorer Timberline is available to order in the US, with deliveries set to start in the middle of the year.
