One of F1’s most successful engine manufacturers will be back after a 22-year hiatus
Ford has confirmed that it will rejoin the Formula 1 championship as an engine supplier from 2026. Its re-entry will coincide with the new powertrain regulations due to be enforced the same year, and will signal a comeback for Ford 22 years after it last produced an F1 engine for Jaguar's ill-fated operation in 2004.
Ford will not mount a full factory entry alongside, instead joining into a partnership with a team already competing in Formula 1. More details about which team it will partner up with will come later today.
The American brand has an illustrious history in F1, dominating the sport in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Over the years, it has become the third most successful engine supplier in F1 history, with a total of ten constructors’, and 13 drivers’ world championships.
Its decision to return to Formula 1 is due to the recent rise in popularity, especially in the US, plus the new 2026 hybrid engine regulations and their closer connection to hybrid and sustainable fuel technology being developed for high performance road cars. It’s a move that many global car companies have also been eyeing up in recent months, including key rival GM with its highly publicised bid for a new entry in partnership with Andretti Racing.
Unlike GM’s program, though, Ford’s re-entry into the sport will see it partner up with an existing team, something that’s gathered more cohesive support from F1 and the FIA.
“The news today that Ford is coming to Formula 1 from 2026 is great for the sport and we are excited to see them join the incredible automotive partners already in Formula 1”, said Stefano Domenicali, President, and CEO of Formula 1.
Ford Motor Company’s executive chair and great-grandson of the Ford’s founder, Bill Ford said “this is the start of a thrilling new chapter in Ford’s motorsports story that began when my great-grandfather won a race that helped launch our company”.
This return to F1 will see Ford Performance enter yet another top-draw racing series, with Mustangs to compete in the 2024 WEC GT3 class, new-era NASCAR championship and new generation of Australian Supercars. Ford is also back as a full works partner with M Sport in the World Rally Championship.
More information about Ford’s F1 partner will be revealed later today..
