Ford is recalling 252,936 Ford Explorers due to the rear axle horizontal mounting bolt that can be fractured. If this happens, it can cause the driveshaft to disconnect, meaning a vehicle placed in ‘Park’ can roll away if the parking brake isn’t applied, and causing a greater risk of accidents.
Certain affected vehicles include:
- 2020, 2021, 2022 Ford Explorer Hybrid
- 2020, 2021, 2022 Ford Explorer PHEV
- 2020, 2021 Ford Explorer Intercept
- 2020, 2021 Ford Explorer Intercept Hybrid
Owners are expected to be notified by mail starting in June, and can then take the vehicle to a dealership where a bushing and axle cover may be replaced, or they will provide an electronic parking brake software update, free of charge.
There are currently no notices on Transport Canada regarding how many Canadian vehicles might be affected. However, you can also check online at Transport Canada, using your VIN, to find out if your car is covered by a recall campaign.
