The Ford Ranger holds a record 11.6% of the New Zealand market in October.

The New Zealand new vehicle market is up 18.2% year-on-year in October to 14,019 units, leading to a year-to-date tally up a whopping 38.1% to 136.880. Note October 2021 is down -6.1% on pre-pandemic October 2019 but the year-to-date volume is up 5.7% on 2019. For once Passenger cars improve their share at +20.2% to 2,503 and 17.8% share vs. 17.6% a year ago, SUVs are up just 8.8% to 6,713 and 47.9% share vs. 52% in October 2020 and Light commercials advance 33.8% to 4,113 and 29.3% share vs. 25.9% last year.

Both Toyota (+52.5%) and Ford (+64.1%) vastly outpace the market to top the brands ranking, reaching 22.5% and 15.1% share respectively vs. 17.3% and 10.4% year-to-date. Mitsubishi (+12.9%) can’t quite match the market growth and retrogrades to #3 overall with 7.9% share vs. 11.8% so far this year, while Nissan (+43.8%) is all guns blazing at #4. In contrast Kia (-65.4%), Mazda (-23%) and Suzuki (-9.5%) suffer. MG (+95.6%) almost doubles its sales year-on-year to break into the Top 10 for the third time in the past 4 months at #9. Like in neighbouring Australia, the Chinese are surging here, with Great Wall (+571.4%) Haval (+185.4%) and LDV (+121.4%) both posting extravagant gains. Volvo (+417.6%), Tesla (+410.5%) and Peugeot (+177.8%) also impress further down.

Model-wise, the Ford Ranger (+137%) smashes its share record to 11.6% vs. a previous best of 9.8% last August and 7.5% so far this year (10% are rentals). In fact all Top 4 models more than double their sales year-on-year: the Toyota RAV4 is up 197.9% to 6.2% share vs. 3.6% YTD, the Toyota Corolla is up 136.2% to 5.3% vs. 2.7% (66% are rentals) and the Mitsubishi Outlander surges 244.6% to 5% vs. 3.6% YTD (20% are rentals). Meanwhile the Toyota Hilux (-18.9%) is stuck in 5th place but holds onto the 2nd spot year-to-date. Below the Nissan Navara (+82.5%) and X-Trail (+164.4%) both euphoric, the MG ZS steps up one spot on last month to a record 8th place overall, scoring a 4th consecutive Top 10 finish. The Hyundai Kona (+66.4%) also makes itself noticed at #9 while the Toyota Camry (#11) and Ford Everest (#12) shoot up and the Great Wall Cannon breaks into the Top 20 for the first time at #20.

Previous month: New Zealand September 2021: Tesla Model 3 up to #2, Haval Jolion in Top 20, market up 51.7%

Previous year: New Zealand Full Year 2020: Kia (+12.7%) island of growth in market down -22.6%
