Ford together with Sime Darby Auto ConneXion (SDAC) organised the brand’s global Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) programme as part of their ongoing effort to promote safe driving behaviour as well as road safety awareness here in Malaysia.
Over 30 drivers from SDAC’s corporate partners from telecommunications to utilities participated in the half-day workshop located at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS) near Putrajaya.
With high traffic accident rates recorded daily here in Malaysia, basic road safety awareness is crucial to promote safer driving behaviours amongst road users. According to MIROS, more than 43% of drivers operate their vehicles while using their mobile phones and less than 10% actually use the seatbelt while seating at the back.
According to Syed Ahmad Muzri Syed Faiz, Managing Director of SDAC, “Road safety is an important topic and we are proud to partner with Ford who has the know-how, to promote a safer driving behaviour among Malaysia motorists. Ford Driving Skills for Life Programme provides useful tools and resources to help driver understand many unpredictable scenarios that could happen on the road while equipping them with knowledge to tackle the situations accordingly.”
The workshop focused on four main areas of training which are:
- Distractions – Making smart decisions behind the wheel to limit distractions and stay focused on the task of driving
- Hazard recognition – How to scan for trouble approaching intersections and safety zones
- Speed and space management – Learning how to adjust speed to maintain space around, ahead and behind a vehicle while avoiding being rear-ended
- Vehicles handling – Understanding the vehicle’s capability and learning to better control the vehicle by leveraging its safety features such as Autonomous Emergency Breaking (AEB), Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning
DSFL is Ford’s flagship global corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme funded by the Ford Motor Company Fund. Globally, Ford DSFL has been introduced to 35 countries for the past 16 years of existence in training licensed drivers of all ages. To date, the program has trained more than 1,000 individuals in safe driving practices in Malaysia.
