Ford starts the month of April off with two massive recalls, one of which is for nearly 392,000 of its pickup trucks and Expedition SUVs, plus a population of Navigator SUVs under its Lincoln luxury brand. The issue stems from a software error with the trailer brake control.
Affected vehicles include model-year 2021-22 F-150 pickups, model-year 2022 Expedition SUVs, Maverick and F-Series heavy-duty trucks, and model-year 2022 Lincoln Navigator SUVs. A software error may cause a towed trailer equipped with an electric or electric-over hydraulic brake system to not brake. This could result in extended stopping distance, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will update the integrated trailer brake control module software for free, and Ford will begin notifying owners April 18. Those with further questions can call the automaker at 866-436-7332 (Ford’s number for this recall is 22S17), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s vehicle-safety hotline at 888-327-4236, or visit its website to check your vehicle identification number and learn more.
