The Ford Galaxy is nearing the end of its production run. Despite the fact that the brand incorporated key novelties soon before the end of the year, it is going to come out without generating much news after three generations on the market since it was introduced in the mid-90s.
The Ford Galaxy is no longer available. After three generations on the market and weathering the onslaught of SUVs in its own range of models, the oval brand’s minivan has vanished, one of the few models with this type of bodywork that was very attractive in previous decades and has lasted, while many have died in slow agony resisting to leave.
The fact is that the Galaxy’s days were numbered, but it still had a few months before succumbing altogether. In reality, Ford disclosed vital and fascinating news regarding this model little over a month ago.
It dropped the diesel engines and put everything in the hands of a self-charging hybrid version with a gasoline engine and more than exceptional performance, with no less than 190 horsepower. It also received the ECO badge, owing to a battery with a capacity of only 1.1 kWh and a range of only a few kilometers.
One of the final minivans on the market is the Ford Galaxy.
The goal of this seven-seater vehicle was not to achieve electric autonomy, but rather to achieve extremely low fuel consumption while lowering CO2 emissions by increasing the fuel tank capacity to about 1,100 kilometers without refueling.
However, the model has begun to vanish from the firm’s European stock. Despite the fact that it appears in the range’s list of models and may be customized, when examining stock, no model shows, indicating that the Valencian Almussafes plant is out of stock.
There won’t be either, because the third generation, which debuted at the Paris Motor Show in October 2014, has already finished its seven-year life cycle. Because variants are still permitted, only ordered units will be built, with a single trim level available, and will be phased out of the market in the following months.
It won’t take long, since the Mondeo will stop production in March, leaving the Valencian factory with all of its capacity dedicated to the Kuga and facing a remodel to accommodate the manufacturing of a new electric model by the middle of the decade.
Above all, the Galaxy needs to be more useful: At the touch of a button, the seats in the third row can be folded down and folded up, and an easy-entry feature makes it easier to get in and out. The tailgate opens electrically (surcharge) for the first time with a wave of the foot. The (optional) multicontour seats with massaging function provide comfort to the driver and front passenger. In addition, the hut has a big panoramic glass roof that lets in lots of light.
This adds to the price of the new Ford S-Max.
The new integrated link rear axle, like the adaptive, speed-dependent steering, should improve comfort.
On request, an optional parking helper (Active Park Assist) with parking in and out function takes over parking procedures in both transverse and longitudinal gaps. Seats that are very slender are designed to maximize the amount of space available. The Galaxy also has Ford’s SYNC 2 connection system.
The trailer load is now two tons.
The Galaxy has intelligent all-wheel drive (iAWD) for the first time. The computer tests the traction of all wheels every 16 milliseconds. If there is a loss of grip, automated countermeasures are taken using an optimum engine power distribution. All-wheel drive is only used when absolutely essential, such as when the automobile understeers in turns. When compared to permanent all-wheel drive, this should save gasoline.
It also guarantees that the trailer weight may be increased: the new Galaxy can now tow trailers weighing up to 2000 kilos. iAWD is available with 150 and 180 horsepower diesel engines for 37,360 and 40,860 euros, respectively.
The variety of support systems is growing once again, with the intelligent speed limiter making its debut in the S-Max. It changes the speed based on the input from the traffic sign recognition system. There’s also a pre-collision assist system that automatically stops in risky circumstances, as well as adaptive LED headlights with glare-free high beam that provide the greatest possible illumination of the road without impeding oncoming or following traffic.
The Mondeo’s engine lineup includes four two-liter diesels that create 120, 150, 180, or 210 horsepower, as well as two Eco Boost petrol engines that provide 160 (1.5-liter) or 240 horsepower (2.0-liter). The redesigned Ford Galaxy will be available in September 2015.
