Ford continues to build excitement for its electric pickup.
The Ford F-150 Lightning has the potential to become the brand's best-selling vehicle in the years ahead. Not only do the base models have an appealing price, but Ford is likely to start deliveries of the Lightning before one of its main rivals, the Chevy Silverado EV, despite the fact that the F-150 Lightning is running behind schedule. Thanks to a live stream that was shared by Ford, we now have a bit more information regarding some of the Ford's specifications. These figures relate to the truck's various battery capacities and include the estimated range for the top Platinum trim.
The standard-range battery capacity for the F-150 Lightning will be 98 kWh, while the extended-range one has a capacity of 131 kWh. The 98-kWh battery is standard on the Pro, XLT, and Lariat trims, while the 131-kWh battery is standard on the Platinum. The bigger battery is optional on lower trims.
As for range, that starts at an EPA-estimated 230 miles for the smaller battery. The mid-range models have the best range of 300 miles with the optional larger battery, and the Platinum can go 280 miles on a full charge. It's likely that the Platinum's larger wheels and other added extras affect its overall range.
By comparison, the Rivian R1T has an EPA-rated range of 314 miles. It offers a 135-kWh battery, but a larger 180-kWh battery is on the way that should provide a range of up to 400 miles. Whereas a 30-amp charger is standard with the Ford’s smaller battery, the bigger battery comes with an 80-amp home charger. With the 30-amp Ford Mobile Power Cord and a 240-volt connection, the standard-range battery will take 15 hours to charge from 15% to 100%, while the extended-range battery will take 20 hours. With the 80-amp cord, that time drops to 10 hours. Of course, DC fast-charging stations are a lot better. In this case, the standard-range battery can be charged from 15% to 80% in 44 minutes, while the extended-range battery will take 41 minutes.
Ford also shared information about the various trims. The more basic Pro comes with rugged black vinyl flooring and black mirror caps, the XLT adds body-color bumpers and many more available extras, and the Lariat takes a step into luxury territory with leather seats, a 15.5-inch touchscreen, and body-color mirrors. Finally, the Platinum boasts 22-inch wheels, the standard extended-range battery, the Ford BlueCruise hands-free system, and a B&O sound system. Although the F-150 Lightning doesn’t set new benchmarks for range, it’s still likely to outsell its rivals when it goes on sale.
