Just a few weeks ago, the Ferrari SF90 Stradale plug-in hybrid supercar made its Malaysian debut, and by the time we were done talking about it, Ferrari has taken the wraps off the 2020 Ferrari SF90 Spider, which is essentially the topless version of the Stradale.
As similar as it is with the SF90 Stradale, the Ferrari SF90 Spider is slightly more special as it is the Prancing Horse’s first production plug-in hybrid spider.
Featuring the latest iteration of Ferrari’s Retractable Hard Top architecture which first debuted on a mid-rear engined berlinetta in 2011, the SF90 Spider is powered by a 780 hp V8 turbo engine and three electric motors – one at the rear and two on the front axle – which bring the maximum power output to a staggering 1,000 hp.
In case you’re wondering how quick it is, the Ferrari SF90 Spider can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in just 2.5 seconds, and from 0-200km/h in 7.0 seconds.
Complementing the powertrain is an AWD system, four drive modes (eDrive, Hybrid, Performance, Quality), a dynamic control system called eSSC, Torque Vectoring, and up to 390kg of downforce at 250km/h.
Despite being a plug-in hybrid and a Spider, the star of the show is still the V8 engine as Ferrari designed the car in a way that the tonneau area has been integrated seamlessly in a way that the engine is clearly visible both when the roof is up or down.
Speaking of which, the retractable hard top goes up or comes down in 14 seconds can also be deployed when the car is on the move, weighs 40 kg lighter than a conventional RHT, and takes only 100 litres of space.
Inside, we have a new steering wheel with a touchpad that allows drivers to control virtually every aspect of the car without moving their hands. The central instrument cluster is now entirely digital with a 16” curved HD screen, which can be fully configured and controlled using the controls on the steering wheel.
On the central tunnel, the automatic gearbox controls are now actioned by a grille-style feature that references Ferrari’s manual gearshift gate.
Other highlights include the Assetto Fiorano suite of features which includes Multimatic shock absorbers, a carbon-fibre rear spoiler, road-homologated Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres, as well as an optional two-tone livery that further underscores the car’s racing vocation.
Those who purchase the car will be entitled to an extended seven-year maintenance programme offered with the SF90 Spider. Available across the entire range, the programme covers all regular maintenance for the first seven years of the car’s life.
