The new 2024 Ferrari SF90 XX is one of the brand’s most extreme road cars to date. Ferrari has unveiled the track-focused version of its flagship, the SF90 in Stradale (coupe) and Spider form. The car has plenty of upgrades to make it faster around a racetrack, these include a revised engine, reworked aerodynamics and lighter materials.
Ferrari’s notoriously chaotic ‘XX’ line of vehicles – dating back to the FXX in 2005, the FXX Evo in 2008, and the LaFerrari-based FXX-K in 2014 – have always been connected to a racetrack but this is the very first time, Ferrari has displayed a pair of road-legal versions of the ‘XX’ cars. All 799 units of the coupe and 599 units of the Spider are already spoken for, so if you want one, tough luck.
Ferrari SF90 XX: Design
Ferrari has taken the eye-catching appearance of the SF90 Stradale and added a slew of active aerodynamic fins, slats, wings, and changes to the cooling system for its electric and thermal components to give it the most efficient aerodynamic performance of any road-legal prancing horse.
The nose has been reworked for a more aggressive appearance, which enhances air intake capacity and, as a result, the performance of the V8 below. The air dams in the fenders are visible in profile, as are the new rims, which have also been engineered to improve aerodynamics and follow what Ferrari refers to as star-burst wheels.
The car boasts the first permanent rear spoiler affixed on a road-going Ferrari since the F50 in 1995, and it is part of an ambitious aerodynamic upgrade. At 250kmph, this can generate 315kg of downforce.
A single wraparound light bar runs the whole of the muscular rear, replacing the dual taillights. Carbon fibre has been liberally employed, as evidenced on the front lip, spitter, wings, roll bars, and diffuser. The Spider’s retractable hard top can be deployed and closed in 14 seconds at speeds of up to 45kmph.
Ferrari SF90 XX: Powertrain
In addition to increasing downforce, the aerodynamic revamp enhances the passage of cold air into the revised radiators, allowing Ferrari to release an extra 30PS when compared to the standard SF90. The car’s total output is rated at 1030PS and 804 Nm of torque.
Ferrari promises that both SF90 XXs will go around 24km on electric power alone, reaching speeds of up to 135kmph. Oh, and the eight-speeder’s gearbox programming has been lifted from the Daytona SP3, promising improved overrun noise.
Its plug-in hybrid technology provides a surprisingly quiet 25km pure-electric range. Unleash the electric motors and the ICE unit to their full potential, and the SF90 XX will sprint from 0 to 100kmph in 2.3 seconds, with 0-200kmph coming in 6.5 seconds for the coupe and 6.7 seconds for the Spider.
Redesigned front brakes and larger rear discs operate in tandem with the ABS-Evo system, which debuted on the Ferrari 296 GTB, to boost the XX’s stopping power: it decelerates from 200kph to a halt in 108.1m and from 100-0kph in 29.2m.
Ferrari SF90 XX: Interior
The car not only oozes racetrack on the exterior but also on the inside. The dashboard is covered in Alcantara, and the racing seats are 1.3kg lighter than the standard Stradale’s single-piece components. The Stradale will be delivered in the second quarter of 2024, with the Spider following in the fourth quarter of the following year.
