Ferrari has finally taken the covers off its new SF90 Spider, a drop-top version of its hybrid hypercar that debuts some six months after the first batch of spy shots surfaced online. With nearly 1,000bhp beneath the accelerator, the SF90 Spider is actually the most powerful convertible on sale today, and it comes at a fraction of the price of the LaFerrari Aperta.
Let’s talk performance. The SF90 Spider carries over the 3.9-litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine from the SF90 Stadale. The motor itself shares a lot in common with the unit you’ll find in the F9 Tributo and 488, only the engine in the Stadale and Spider comes bundled in with two electric motors. Together, the motors (one on each axle) produce 217bhp, bringing the total output up to 986bhp. That makes it more powerful than the LaFerrari Aperta and, therefore, is the most powerful convertible on sale.
Then there are the numbers. A 0-62mph sprint takes just 2.5 seconds, matching the hard top version, while its top speed of 211mph is just 1mph shy of the Stradale’s. What’s more impressive, though, is that the SF90 Spider is actually faster around Ferrari’s legendary Fiorano test track than the hard top LaFerrari.
Even the roof is fast. You’ll be able to raise and lower the roof in just 14 seconds. There is, however, a small problem. You see, the roof is a critical structural point in a car’s design. Once removed, most cars need extra strengthening to compensate for the lack of fixed roof. And the SF90 Spider is no exception, as it’s been loaded up with 100kg of chassis reinforcements. Couple that with the roof mechanism and you get a weight of 1,670kg, making it quite a bit heavier than the standard car.
At least it’s cheap. Well, relatively speaking. The SF90 Spider carries a price tag of €473,000, which is roughly £425,000. Expensive for some, but it’s faster than a LaFerrari and costs about a third of the price. Bargain, right?
