Update: ‘Ferrari Purosangue design’ and ‘Global launch’ sections updated.
The Ferrari Purosangue will hit the showrooms in 2022, Ferrari had announced last year. The company has also revealed that the first Ferrari electric car, rumored to be another Ferrari SUV (FUV), will debut in 2025.
The new CEO and the senior management team will share Ferrari’s exciting future with you during our CMD (Capital Markets Day) in 2022, which will also be a year of very important new product launches, particularly the Purosangue, which is turning out to be something truly special.

Ferrari Purosangue design
In its annual report for 2020, Ferrari said that the Purosangue will be “a luxury high-performance vehicle within the GT range.” The development of unconventional models like the Purosangue is expected to raise the innovation requirements at the company, like the body style, for instance, “which will vary much more significantly than in the past.”
From Ferrari designer Flavio Manzoni to the late-FCA CEO Sergio Marchionne, time and again, FCA/Ferrari officials have voiced their reservations for a Ferrari SUV, or an FUV, as some like it. But in 2018, sentiments had changed in the company’s boardroom, and the Ferrari Purosangue was announced. Like the customer-driven SUV boom, the regulation-enforced emission norms necessitating electrification is something Ferrari cannot overlook when plotting a new car.
“The SF90 was a challenge, but the Purosangue SUV is another dimension of complication,” Michael Leiters, former Chief Technical Officer, Ferrari, had told topgear.com in 2020. The German said that the Ferrari Purosangue would not seem a “contradiction” when it is unveiled. The CTO’s claims seem true because the SUV doesn’t look like much of a contradiction from the latest spy shots leaked on Instagram on February 21, 2022.
Roma & SF 90 Stradale influences
Ferrari released the first proper teaser of the Purosangue SUV on March 23, 2022. The teaser was highly dark, so we increased the exposure for more details to be visible. And the SUV appears muscular and intimidating. It’s unmistakably a Ferrari — there seems to be lots of aerodynamic trickery upfront around the headlamps and at the bottom. The SUV appears to have a wide track upfront, presumably making it sure-footed on the road.

Viewers can instantly connect with the design language, which appears like a blend of the Ferrari Roma and the SF90 Stradale. The nose is reminiscent of the Roma, while the headlamps are unmistakably from the SF 90 Stradale. Ferrari has moved away from its usual L-shaped headlamps, and the Purosangue features sleek slit design headlamps with a duct for cooling the brakes. The C-shaped unit could house matrix LEDs with active beam control. There’s a complex bonnet design to optimize cooling and aerodynamics, while the floor could also house vortex generators.
We can also see 20-inch rims on the Purosangue and a wide side skirt with an inward sculpting bodywork which looks like an aerodynamic element to enhance downforce. At the rear, there are quad tailpipes, an enormous diffuser, a subtle roof-mounted spoiler, and a full-width LED light bar to accentuate the car’s width. There’s a strongly raked rear screen, and the SUV’s shoulder line appears muscular from the rear. It looks like the model will have 305 section rear tires for enhanced grip.

Exor and Ferrari have formed a long-term, multi-year partnership with design firm LoveFrom, which Former Apple chief design officer and industrial design prodigy Jony Ive and another industrial designer Marc Newson co-founded in 2019.
Automakers are increasingly switching from aggressive to clean designs to reflect the personality of the all-electric powertrains. Perhaps, Ferrari will tread in that direction, at least for its EVs. Jony Ive designed some groundbreaking products with revolutionary designs during his tenure at Apple, and minimalist design philosophy is certainly his thing. Perhaps Ive’s magic could be seen in the design of the cockpit and other vital electronics of the future EVs.
For the moment though, there may not be not radical changes to designs that have been approved. Autoevolution pointed out that the Ferrari Purosangue is equipped with paddle shifters, circular HVAC vents, and an instrument cluster similar to that of the Roma and SF90 Stradale.
Platform & Powertrains
Ferrari is working on at least three SUVs, said a carmagazine.co.uk report last year. The Ferrari Purosangue (codename: Ferrari F175) will be a gasoline-electric hybrid model, but those arriving later will be all-electric.
Various speculations about the platform of the Ferrari Purosangue have been made. According to the British report, Ferrari will build the Purosangue on a skateboard platform though it plans to offer it with only a hybrid powertrain because it has pure electric spin-offs, codenamed ‘Ferrari F244’ and ‘Ferrari F245’, in the pipeline.

Hybrid powertrain
The Purosangue will likely sport a hybrid powertrain combining a 4.0-liter V8 engine with electric motor(s) for a net power of 700 hp. There’s speak of a conventional, 800 hp V12 engine as well, and it should be aimed squarely at the purists. A plug-in hybrid system is expected in this family-friendly Ferrari that would be comfortably usable in daily commutes. However, whether it would be the V8 engine-based hybrid or something smaller remains to be seen. A brand-new hybrid twin-turbo V6 powertrain shared with a Maserati is also possible, as per a carscoops.com report.
Having produced electrified powertrains for some nine years already (since the LaFerrari), the propulsion system for the Ferrari SUV won’t prove challenging for the Italians. It’s actually the design that would be of the most concern, as the body style is all against what Ferrari stands for.
Global launch
The Ferrari Purosangue, the most widely anticipated Ferrari since the LaFerrari in 2013, was expected to be revealed in 2021. However, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and the ongoing semiconductor chip shortage, the debut is speculated to have faced a delay.
During the 2021 full year and fourth quarter results conference call on February 2, 2022, Ferrari disclosed a new Purosangue release date. Benedetto Vigna, the company’s new permanent CEO (more details in the following section), said that it will unveil the first Ferrari SUV later this year. Vigna said that the Purosangue’s driving experience “is really astonishing.”
In this year in ’22, we will unveil the much-anticipated Purosangue, which I’m confident will exceed our customer expectation.

Existing Ferrari customers seem to have received official communication from Maranello, notifying them of the upcoming SUV’s debut, according to allcarnews (via Instagram) on March 23, 2022. Ferrari says the SUV will be a ‘game-changer’ and mark an ‘extraordinary milestone’ in the brand’s decorated history. Expect the SUV to pack exceptional performance thanks to a ‘thoroughbred Ferrari engine.’ Local Ferrari dealers will contact existing customers to give out more details about the SUV, including the possibility of placing pre-orders.
U.S. launch
Production of the Purosangue will begin later this year, but deliveries in the United States should commence in 2023. Company sources have indicated a price tag upwards of EUR 300,000 or about USD 350,000 for the Ferrari FUV. U.S. deliveries should be a priority for the Ferrari sales team.
Purosangue, which literally means a “thoroughbred” or “pure-bred” in Italian, was not a straightforward choice. It was reported that Ferrari was facing legal challenges in commercializing the name for the FUV.
New Ferrari CEO to accelerate electrification
On December 10, 2020, Louis Camilleri stepped down from his CEO position at Ferrari and retired for personal reasons. Elkann became the interim CEO to manage his responsibilities until the Ferrari Board of Directors found his successor. On June 9, 2021, the company announced Benedetto Vigna as its new permanent CEO.
Vigna, the popular President of STMicroelectronics, a leading semiconductor solutions company in Switzerland, joined Ferrari on September 1, 2021. He brings over 26 years of experience in the semiconductor industry to Ferrari for a smooth rollout of its next-generation technologies, including electric powertrains.
Reshuffle
An announcement by Ferrari on January 10, 2022, elaborates on further new recruitments. This includes the newly promoted Chief Product Development Officer, Gianmaria Fulgenzi, who has worked at Ferrari since 2002, the new Chief Research and Development Officer, Ernesto Lasalandra joining from STMicroelectronics, Chief Digital & Data Officer, Silvia Gabrielli who has been with Ferrari since 2019, Chief Technologies & Infrastructures Officer, Davide Abate who has been at the firm since 2012, a new Chief Purchasing & Quality Officer, Angelo Pesci joining from STMicroelectronics, Chief Manufacturing Officer, and Andrea Antichi working at Ferrari since 2006. All these departments will report directly to the CEO.
Ferrari states that this organizational reshuffle is aimed at further innovation, optimizing processes, and increasing collaboration internally, as well as with external partners to stay true to its racing DNA while moving towards its target of carbon neutrality by 2030.
