York Police DepartmentThe world has one fewer Ferrari 812 GTS in working order this week, after thieves wrecked this particular example of the 789-hp supercar in York, Maine, according to The Portland Press Herald.
Police in York are still searching for answers related to the incident, which took place sometime between Saturday night and Sunday morning. According to The Press Herald, the owner of this 812 GTS, who is a Canadian citizen, parked the car at the Cliff House in Cape Neddick, Maine, before handing the keys over to the valet station. The car remained parked in the garage until at least 11:30 p.m., when the Cliff House security guard last recalled seeing the car. Investigators currently believe the thieves removed the keys from the valet box and simply drove out of the garage.
“I don’t think we get many vehicles like that around here,” York Detective Sgt. Thomas Cryan said in a statement to the Portsmouth Herald. “I would imagine somebody saw an opportunity to take it for a ride.”

When the car was later discovered at 5:28 a.m. on Sunday, it was clear that whoever took the car had quite a ride indeed. Located just off the intersection of Route 1 and Mountain Road in York, the drop-top V-12 was discovered with severe damage to the front end and a set of blown airbags. The windshield was also kicked out, suggesting the thieves struggled to get the doors open after the wreck, or are just tremendously spiteful individuals.
The owner of this car told Sgt. Cryan that the car’s value was estimated at $700,000. Several examples of the 812 GTS have sold on Bring a Trailer for over $620,000 in recent months, suggesting the owner isn’t too far off with that approximation. It doesn’t help that Ferrari closed ordering books on the 812 line back in February, meaning this owner can’t order another one regardless of an insurance payout.
Anyone with any information related to this incident is asked to call Sgt. Cryan at 207-363-4444, or contact the Seacoast Crime Stoppers here. The York Police Department is currently offering a $1000 reward for help solving the case.
