Ferrari’s 2021 F1 drivers limbered up for this weekend’s season opener in Bahrain by letting rip in a pair of 986bhp Ferrari SF90 hybrids.
In the official Ferrari video Charles Leclerc can be seen drifting a yellow SF90 Spider around Italy’s legendary Imola race circuit before new signing Carlos Sainz joins him at the wheel of an SF90 Stradale coupé equipped with the optional track focused Assetto Fiorano pack.
The SF90 Straddle was launched in 2019, but the Spider version is a more recent addition, appearing in November 2020. Both cars use the same 769bhp twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine mated to a trio of electric motors that add an 217 additional horses.
Two of those motors are mounted at the front of the SF90 making it Ferrari’s first four-wheel drive supercar (though not its first four-wheel drive road car; the FF shooting brake got there a decade ago).
The SF90 Spider’s retractable roof mechanism adds 100kg of ballast, not that it seems to slow Leclerc down to any extent. But because this is a hyper-slick marketing video, rather than a warts and all reality Channel 5 documentary, it’s hard to get a feel for who’s the better wheelman. We’ll have to tune in to the F1 on Sunday for that.
