The second-generation BMW 2 Series Active Tourer was unveiled in 2021, and the redesigned model is now available in the Europe and the UK. BMW will offer the 225e xDrive and 230e xDrive plug-in-hybrid variants in the UK and Europe from summer 2022, with impressive electric-only range and a plethora of equipment as standard.
2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV variants
The previous generation 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV was offered in one variant: 225xe. The 2022 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV with two variants should suit more customers. The PHEV models are not available for configuration yet on BMW UK and Europe websites, but the brand has listed three variants for the petrol versions, and the same are likely to be offered on the PHEV: Luxury, Sport and M Sport. The last one would get the sporty M styling treatment.
The new plug-in hybrid MPV features the fifth-generation BMW eDrive technology which debuted in the BMW iX3 in 2020. The new-generation eDrive system includes a comprehensively upgraded electric motor, battery pack, and power electronics, and it brings a considerable improvement to the plug-in hybrid MPV’s pure electric range. The preliminary electric-only range figure according to the BMW UK official website is 49 miles (90 km).

The BMW 225e xDrive Active Tourer and the BMW 230e xDrive Active Tourer get a 1.5-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine powering the front wheels and an electric motor powering the rear wheels. The base variant’s combined power is 241 bhp, while the top-end variant has a significantly higher combined power of 322 bhp.
Specifications
The launch of the 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV will mark a new era of PHEVs at BMW. This will be the brand’s first fifth-generation plug-in hybrid car. The Gen5 technology brings significant improvements in efficiency and dynamics.

A 14.2 kWh (net)/16.3 kWh (gross) battery pack, located low down in the vehicle’s floor and featuring a particularly flat design, feeds the electric motor. It provides a zero-emissions driving range (WLTP) of up to 50 miles, and the figure applicable for the UK is 49 miles. A 7.4 kW onboard charger allows charging the battery pack from 0 to 100% SoC in around 2.5 hours. Through a household socket, the charging process takes close to 8 hours.
BMW Group says it has reduced the proportion of cobalt in the cell cathode material to less than 10%. Moreover, it buys cobalt and lithium and supplies for the cell manufacturer to ensure the observation of environmental and sustainability standards and human rights during their extraction and processing.
Lesser boot space & towing capacity
The 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV lags behind the combustion variant on the load capacity because of the added aggregates of the electrical system. The regular and mild-hybrid variants provide up to 470 litres of load capacity that is expandable to up to 1,455 litres. The plug-in hybrid variants have 406 litres of cargo space behind the rear seats, and folding down the rear seats increases the cargo space to 1,370 litres. The towing capacity is 100 kg lower – 1,400 kg (provisional value).
Added comfort & convenience
The 2 Series Active Tourer plug-in hybrid should offer the driver benefits that make up for the limitations. Operating in EV mode feels calmer and more comfortable, which is an asset in luxury cars. The traction battery pack uses the energy usually lost from the friction of braking to recharge itself. Plus, it’s cheaper to drive on electricity than petrol or diesel. There’s also the advantage of privileges at parking spots. Lastly, auxiliary heating and AC are standard features, so the occupants step into the car at the right temperature every time.

Equipment levels are impressive on the PHEV. It gets the BMW Curved Display, similar to what’s seen on the iX electric SUV and the i4 electric sedan. The screens would benefit from the latest generation BMW iDrive 8 software. The said, LED lighting, BMW Personal Assistant, rear view camera and powered tailgate are standard features.
The Comfort variant adds the Technology Pack which offers adaptive headlamps, 18-inch wheels and Vernasca leather upholstery along with premium door trims as well. The M Sport variant adds sporty 19-inch wheels and redesigned front and rear bumpers which make the tourer appear more aggressive.
Price & Release Date
The company expects to launch the 2022 BMW 2 Series Active Tourer PHEV in Europe by July 2022. In the UK, BMW could price the car from around GBP 35,000, well above the mild-hybrid model which starts at GBP 30,265. BMW Group offers a total of 17 plug-in hybrid models and sells them in 95 markets across the globe.
