Gasgoo Munich-XPENG Vice President Yu Tao unveiled the MONA series’ first SUV on June 22, naming it the XPENG MONA L03. The move brings the company’s two-year "MONALISA" naming strategy to fruition, creating a full lineup alongside its existing sedan. The new model is set for an official launch on July 2.Internally, the entire MONA series was originally code-named "MONALISA" when the project was greenlit. Within the lineup, "M" designates sedans, represented by the existing M03, while "L" denotes SUVs, represented by the newly announced L03. Together, these distinct body styles complete the MONALISA product ecosystem.Image Source: XPENGIn terms of positioning, both the M03 and L03 share a unified design philosophy tailored to younger consumers. They target the entry-level smart and stylish EV segment, aiming to become the first personal new-energy vehicle for young buyers—whether they prefer a sedan or an SUV.Strategically, the L03 is a crucial step for XPENG to flesh out its entry-level portfolio. While the M03 has focused on the entry-level pure-electric sedan market, the L03 enters the compact SUV segment to capture young drivers who prioritize space and ground clearance. This expands the MONA series beyond a single model into a dual-line structure covering both sedans and SUVs, broadening its reach within this price bracket.
