The Mazda 2026 CX-90.@mpcurtetWith the plethora of three-row SUVs that are available these days, Mazda has still managed to stand out with a dual treatment of its own largest vehicle: the CX-90. Both the conventionally powered and plug-in hybrid version of the 2026 CX-90 are beautiful and smooth operators that -- like Mazda generally over the last decade -- have the brand punching over its fighting weight. For example, the typical Mazda ride, in these two versions of CX-90 as well as others, is nearing the vaunted, industry-standard level of Lexus, with nimble and smooth – though somewhat firm – handling that nicely complement the new model's premium look and feel.In any event, the CX-90 and CX-90 hybrid are virtually identical except for their powertrains, with the hybrid differentiating itself largely by being slightly quicker and more fuel-efficient.There's new standard equipment for the hybrids including 21-inch wheels, ventilated front seats, heated first and second-row seats, an eight-way power-adjustable driver's seat with power lumbar support and two-position memory setting, an eight-way passenger seat, and a heated steering wheel. Amazon Alexa technology is now standard on all 2026 CX-90s, and the popular Polymetal Gray metallic paint finish is now available across the lineup. All CX-90s feature a 3.3-liter turbocharged inline-six engine, providing 280 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque in non-S trims and 340 horsepower and 369 pound-feet in the S models. The hybrid variant offers 323 horsepower and 369 pound-feet.True to its hybrid status, the CX-90 Hybrid returns 56 MPGe, according to the EPA – an agency metro that estimates PHEV and EV vehicle efficiency. The vehicle's fuel economy is estimated by the EPA at 24 mpg, 28 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined.CX-90 – both models – are representative of the upgrading of Mazda's interiors, a key advance in the steady rise of the brand's esteem among American near-luxury buyers. The only problem with all of this is that Mazda wasn't able to differentiate CX-90 from competitors in one area: third-row roominess. Like many of the new breed of trend-seeking three-rowers, it's kids only in the back of the CX-90; however, the second row, in both bench-seat and captain's chair formations, is roomier than in most competitors.Pricing of the 2026 CX-90 Hybrid begins at $52,000 and rises to $60,000 with the top trim and options. With only minor changes to the lineup for 2026, the mid-tier Premium Sports trim represents the best value. Though it commands a significant price premium over the base Preferred trim; the Premium Sport brings blackout exterior trim, a sunroof, second-row captain's chairs, navigation, and an upgraded 12-speeaker audio system – enough to justify the upcharge.
