Hand-built in low volumes, the V10 in the Dodge Viper was one of the most iconic production engines of all time, used to propel one of America's ultimate sports cars. By the time the Viper left us in 2017, the 8.4-liter V10 was producing 645 hp. In the years that followed its departure, advances in forced induction, electrification, and engine design would see a new wave of American performance engines handily boot the Viper from the horsepower ranking lists it once dominated, paving the way for modern machinery approaching quadruple the Viper's horsepower level.Below, we're counting down the 10 most powerful American production engines ever made. Chevrolet and Dodge are well represented in the rankings below, though we won't be seeing any V10-powered snakes.Horsepower figures may vary by market and available fuel octane levels. For this story, we're classifying production engines as any engine produced for sale in more than one unit. Hennessey Venom F5 1,817 horsepower and beyond Hennessey Venom F5 Revolution LF aboveTexas-based Hennessey takes top position on our list with the Venom F5, an ultra-rare, built-to-order hypercar powered by a twin-turbocharged V8 engine dubbed "Fury". The F5 itself is named after the highest rating of Tornado intensity on the Fujita scale, and standard variations generate 1,817 horsepower. An incredible power-to-weight ratio is enabled by the F5's custom carbon fiber chassis. Look for 0-60 in well under three seconds, with 125 mph arriving in five seconds. SSC Tuatara 1,750 horsepower Tuatara SSC Washington-based SSC's hypercar runs a twin-turbocharged V8 engine with an 8,800 rpm redline enabled in part thanks to its flat-plane crank design. The Tuatara is named after a spike-backed reptile from New Zealand, in the Maori language. A collaboration between SSC founder Jerrod Shelby and famous designer Jason Castriota, the Tuatara's ultra-low drag coefficient lets it slip virtually unnoticed through the air, enabling serious feats of speed. Still, a 2020 top speed record attempt was highly controversial. A verified pass measured a two-way average of 283 mph – that's more than a third of the way to the sound barrier. Look for 1,750 horsepower for starters. Czinger 21C 1,250 horsepower and beyond 2022 SSC Tuatara engineWith 1,250 horsepower for starters, the Czinger 21C might have the most remarkable engine on your page. Based in Los Angeles, Czinger's hybrid-assisted 2.9-liter V8 is twin turbocharged and makes 950 horsepower on its own. That's 330 horsepower per liter, if you're counting. Electric motors add additional boost and enable torque vectoring as well as an additional boost of power at all rpm, right to the 11,000 rpm redline of the gas engine. There's also AWD, which means the 21C will get to 60 much faster than the considerably more powerful entries above it on your page. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X 1,250 horsepower 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1X Quail Silver Limited Edition overheadHere's another entry with 1,250 horsepower, served up in a similar way. Like the 1,250-horsepower Czinger 21C, the Corvette ZR1X uses a V8 engine, turbochargers and electric motors to take the V8 engine to all new limits of output. The ZR1X is the pinnacle Corvette experience, building on the crushing ZR1 with an electrified front axle that boosts power and grip, and puts this all-American hybrid into sub-two-second territory when it comes to 0-60 mph acceleration. Few cars on the road will be faster, or offer more performance for the dollar. Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 1,064 horsepower 2026 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 Exterior Our next entry is also a Corvette, and we've got a few more Corvettes to go as well. With 1,064 horsepower, the ZR1 is a rear-drive configuration running the same twin-turbocharged LT7 V8 as the ZR1X, but without the electrified front axle. This is one of the most advanced V8 engines ever built, and runs some of the largest turbochargers ever fitted to a production car. With the rear tires handling over 800 lb-ft of torque, look for 0-60 in just over two seconds. Here's where the ZR1 fits into the current Corvette lineup. Dodge Challenger / Charger SRT (Various) 707–1,025 horsepower 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT DemonUnlike the other engines we've shown you so far, this one was designed to have output scaled up and down depending on the application, meaning it covers a range of output levels between 707 and 1,025 horsepower. It's the first engine on your page to really democratize horsepower. When the Hellcats launched initially, Dodge was pushing the way towards higher-than-ever output levels from supercharged V8 engines, and the early machines with 707 horsepower were just the beginning. Before long, engineers had tinkered with SRT's most potent powerplant to enable specialized versions that generated 807 horsepower in machinery like the 2023 Dodge Challenger SRT Super Stock, and 1,025 horsepower in the Challenger SRT Demon 170. Ford Mustang GTD 815 horsepower 2025 ford mustang gtd track The Mustang GTD's powertrain is a race-bred cocktail of upgrades, enhancements and engineering tweaks. Taking the Predator V8 engine to its highest production output levels, drivers get 815 horsepower from a supercharged 5.2-liter V8 with flat-plane crank. This engine was chosen for its proven architecture and reputation for durability, ideal for track-day drivers. The rear-mounted 8-speed automatic shifts in a blink and optimizes the GTD's weight balance, while the suspension, aerodynamics and braking systems are all upgraded to the highest performance levels possible. 2019 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 755 horsepower 2019 corvette zr1By 2019, the Dodge Viper had been resting in peace for a few years and the Chevrolet Corvette was still very much alive and well. In fact, with the 755-horsepower Corvette ZR1 rocking a supercharged V8 engine as the fastest Corvette ever, GM was readying to send this generation out with a bang. This most extreme-performing Corvette variant of the day left the most extreme Dodge Viper ever a full 110 horsepower in its dust. 2025 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 670 horsepower 2026 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 ExteriorIf you're counting, you'll notice this is the third time the latest Corvette's 5.5-liter LT7 engine has appeared on your page. This time, it's bare naked. In the Corvette Z06, the LT7 gets neither the twin turbos nor hybrid boost added to higher performing variations. The result is a free-breathing, all-motor V8 with flat-plane crank that revs to the moon and delivers 670 screaming horsepower. This is the only naturally aspirated engine on your page. Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing / Escalade V 668–682 horsepower 2026 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing Curated Exterior front 3/4With output starting just a tick below that of the Corvette Z06, Cadillac's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine rounds up last place on your page with 668 horsepower in the CT5-V Blackwing and 682 horsepower in the Escalade V. Hand-built in small numbers, this production engine represents the culmination of decades of engineering expertise with performance V8 engines, and utilizes lessons learned from past applications of earlier supercharged V8s. You can even get a manual transmission with yours, in the CT5-V Blackwing.Sources: Chevrolet, Hennessey
