Ford is working on an entry-level boxy SUV priced from $25,000. The new model will offer gasoline and hybrid powertrain options. It will reportedly be manufactured in Mexico starting in 2029. Ford is moving to fill the hole left by the Escape, and the plan is an all-new budget SUV with a target price of $25,000. The model surfaced at a private dealer meeting in Las Vegas, sharing the room with the first prototype of Ford’s four-door Mustang Mach 4 and its reported hybrid V8. Ford expects the SUV to reach the road in 2029, with buyers choosing between gasoline and hybrid power. Ford executives cautioned that the designs weren’t locked in and were shown only to convey a general sense of size. Boxy Bodywork, Bronco Sport Vibes According to the publication, people at the meeting described the unnamed crossover as having wide, boxy bodywork, hinting at something in the vein of the Bronco Sport. One attendee said it resembles the first-generation Escape from the early ’00s, which was also sold in Europe as the Maverick. The original Ford Escape (2001-2007) While Ford didn’t disclose where it plans to build the crossover, Autonews quotes three people with knowledge of the brand’s plans who said the budget SUV is to be assembled at the Hermosillo Assembly Plant in Mexico starting in 2029. It will be cheaper than the Maverick, which starts at $28,145, the outgoing Escape at $30,350, and the Bronco Sport at $31,845. The project aligns with Ford’s promise to deliver five new vehicles priced under $40k by 2030. Other members of that group include the electric Fathom midsize pickup, which is set to arrive next year starting at $28,350, and a sub-$40k four-door Mustang sedan slated for 2029 with a hybrid V8.
