With the introduction of the new BMW 520d M Sport (M Performance Edition), BMW Thailand is making its most successful business sedan even more eye-catching than it already is. A touch of the dynamic agility inherent in racing has now been added to the distinctive appeal of the iconic executive sedan, which will attract the attention of onlookers as a result of its sportier appearance.
The M Sport is equipped with namesake parts such as the M Performance kidney grille in carbon fibre, M Performance front splitter in carbon fibre, rear carbon spoiler, carbon mirror caps, M Performance accent stripes and M Performance side stripes.
What’s new
The revised external appearance of the seventh generation 5 Series, with its eye-catching design and clearly structured surfaces at the front and back, is the highlight of the facelift.
The octagonal shape of the kidney grille, which is 20% bigger than the previous model, instantly draws the eye. This contemporary rendition of the BMW emblem adds more width and height, and sits in a lower position in the front apron, which is framed by a single piece of bodywork. Additionally, the vertical bars — the top portions of which extend farther out — contribute to the grille’s stunning look by adding to its overall height. The greater proportions of the grille provide an appealing contrast with the now smaller adaptive LED headlights with L-shaped daytime driving lights that help to create a more concentrated appearance on the road. Its expressive look is further enhanced by vertical air intakes on each side of the front apron, which highlight the car’s beautiful interplay of lines on the outside.
In addition, clean surfaces and simple lines at the rear of the new M Sport contribute to the vehicle’s beautifully dynamic and contemporary image. The 5 Series is distinguished by its new three-dimensional sculpted LED rear lights, which have an L-shaped pattern and black edges to provide a distinct visual identity. The rear lights are combined into a single fixture to guarantee the vehicle has a strong visual presence. As an additional feature, the new M Sport has trapezoidal tailpipe finishers that are now incorporated into the rear apron inlay on the left and right sides of the vehicle.
The car’s overall length has been increased by 27mm over its predecessor and now sits at 4,963mm, accentuating the sweeping beauty. In its class, the new 5 Series maintains its leadership in aerodynamics with a drag coefficient as low as 0.23. A pair of 18-inch M light alloy wheels in the double-spoke design are also included as standard equipment.
A long wheelbase and wide tracks and lightweight construction means a 50:50 weight distribution. Additionally, the chassis, which is comprised of a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle, has been fine-tuned with the express goal of combining well-resolved daily driving characteristics with long-distance comfort and great driving dynamics.
Tech
Cutting-edge driver assistance technologies are now available. Standard equipment on the M Sport includes a driving assist package, cruise control with brake function, and a rearview camera. An “Attentiveness Assistant” also is incorporated. Numerous safety technologies including a collision sensor, side impact prevention, Active Protection and Park Distance Control further contribute to the driver’s peace of mind.
Interior
The cabin of the new 5 Series is characterised by high-quality materials and excellent craftsmanship. The buttons on the centre console feature a high-gloss black surface that matches the rest of the interior. Along with Dakota leather seats, an instrument panel made of Sensatec, and aluminium smoke grey interior trim finishes with pearl chrome highlights, you get an M Sport leather steering wheel with newly arranged multifunction buttons and an M Sport leather shift knob.
The 5 is equipped with a cutting-edge infotainment system, which includes BMW’s Head-up Display as well as the latest BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a 12.3-inch control display and BMW’s latest Operating System 7, which allows for a greater number of customisation options. The comfort access system makes it easier for the driver and passengers to enter and exit the car. Drivers have the ability to select many control options, including the control display’s touchscreen, the iDrive controller, steering-wheel and voice activation through the BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant and gesture control.
