Chinese drifter slides his GD Subaru WRX on ice non-stop for more than 6km
A GD-series Subaru WRX has slid its way into the record books, setting a new ice drifting distance world record of 6.231km in the hands of Chinese racing driver Wang Dongjiang.
Taking around 15 minutes to complete, the record-breaking power slide was carried out on a purpose-built track carved into Meilong Lake in the Jilin Province of China.
Measuring 311.58m around the perimeter, Wang reeled off 23 laps of the course non-stop in front of hundreds of spectators as well as an official Guinness World Records adjudicator and multiple “specialist witnesses” to verify the attempt and eventual record.
With the ambient temperature somewhere in vicinity of minus-15 degrees Celsius, the ice was measured at around 40cm thick – more than enough to support a stripped-out, competition-spec GD WRX.
Backed by the local government and run by the Northeast Meihekou City Cultural Industry Development Group, the event was designed to promote local tourism and provide a supporting spectacle to the Beijing Winter Olympics, which were taking place at the time of the attempt.
While the attempt was made back in January, it’s only just been verified and authenticated by Guinness World Records.
No stranger to going sideways, 58-year-old Wang has been a regular participant and podium finisher of the China Drifting Competition.
The all-time drifting distance record belongs to Johan Schwartz, who piloted a BMW M5 sideways for 374.1km back in 2018, while a Porsche Taycan takes the crown for the longest electric vehicle drift.
