DB Schenker is sending the first Volta Zero prototype on the road. A total of 150 Volta trucks will then be handed over to the logistics company in 2023. The all-electric Volta Zero prototype is part of a European field test.
“As the market leader, we aspire to be the world’s number one provider of green logistics,” says Cyrille Bonjean, Head of Land Transport at DB Schenker Europe. He says the European deployment of Volta Zero Trucks is a milestone for Schenker and Volta Trucks. Feedback from Schenker drivers and transport operators will be taken into account for the series production of the all-electric Volta Zero.
In September, the two companies completed the first test phase with the all-electric Volta Zero in Europe. It was the first time a prototype of the Volta Zero drove on the roads and in a real sales environment in Paris for design verification. Schenker will test vehicles in 18 European and Scandinavian cities for the second test phase, including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway.
However, these test vehicles are not the first batch of the nearly 1,500 electric trucks DB Schenker ordered in 2021. According to Volta, the 150 electric vehicles mentioned above to be handed over this year will, after all, be “series production vehicles.” Series production will reportedly start at the beginning of the second quarter of 2023 at Steyr in Austria.
The freight forwarder already has nearly 200 electric trucks in its fleet worldwide, ranging from 7,5t to 19t. With the 150 Volta Zero production vehicles to be delivered before the year’s end, DB Schenker can offer zero-emission deliveries in 124 cities in 22 countries.
