In Germany, the Frankfurter Entsorgungs- und Service GmbH (FES) will be putting eight eEconic from Mercedes Benz Trucks into operation with municipal house-to-house waste collection in the Rhine-Main region.
Daimler Truck says that the inclusion of their Mercedes Benz eEconic electric vehicles into FES fleets comes after 6 months of vehicle tests in real-life operations. The first six of eight series-production eEconic vehicles have already been handed over. FES is the largest disposal company in the Rhine-Main region.
The electric truck is characterised by a low-floor truck with a permissible gross vehicle weight of 27 tons. The vehicle with two electric motors, as well as an e-axle with an integrated drive unit, is based on the eActros for heavy-duty distribution haulage. The vehicle’s batteries consist of three battery packs, each with 112 kWh.
Daimler Trucks says the electric trucks have proven to be able to cover the vast majority of typical refuse collection routes in single-shift operation without intermediate charging. With the appropriate driving style, electrical energy can be recovered through recuperation, which is an advantage in stop-and-go operations for waste collection.
The truck can be charged with up to 160 kW, and the three eEconic battery packs require just over an hour to charge from 20 to 80 per cent at a standard DC rapid charging station with 400 A charging current. At the FES depot, several charging stations from the technology company ABB have been installed.

The vehicle also fits perfectly with our operational requirements and our charging concept, in which refuse vehicles are supplied with electricity from the waste-to-energy plant in their depot.
