Global motorsport has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic with prestigious events being rescheduled, or even cancelled in their entirety. While Formula 1 may be the most famed automotive casualty, other series such as Ferrari Challenge UK have also been compromised.
The 2020 season-opening event, due to take place at Snetterton Circuit in England from 17-19 April, will not go ahead due to health concerns. Social distancing practices to help prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the UK will stop this typically packed event from going ahead. Ferrari North Europe have stated that the event will be rescheduled for a later date – it’s the same story for the North American Indianapolis races over the same days.
Ferrari Challenge launched in 1993 as a one-make championship for owners wanting to experience the world of motorsport for themselves. Today, there are several series that make up the Ferrari Challenge; Europe, North America, UK and the Asia Pacific region. Gentlemen drivers can race wheel-to-wheel at some of the world’s most prestigious tracks.
Ferrari recently revealed the new 488 Challenge EVO racer for the 2020 season. Building upon the foundations of the regular 488 Challenge, the EVO features more sophisticated aerodynamics that boosts downforce by up to 50% over its predecessor. A series of chassis revisions further enhance this Italian Stallion.
Spectators of the Ferrari Challenge event are also treated to several other rarified Prancing Horses stretching their legs on track. Ferrari’s XX program – populated by track variants of LaFerrari and the 599 – frequently use this time to get driver’s behind the wheel in oder to collect development data. The Italian marque also helps private owners of ex-Formula 1 cars run on these days via its F1 Clienti service.
Ferrari Challenge UK isn’t the first motorsport series touched by COVID-19, nor will it be the last.
