Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) have become all the rage in India over the past few years with driver aids becoming a point of competition amongst rivals in many segments across India.
Continental, the German automotive parts supply, is currently looking to bring its take on Level 2 ADAS to India. The Hanover-based giant has been in talks with Indian automotive manufacturers to bring its ADAS setups to their cars.
So with Continental likely to supply Indian car manufacturers with Level 2 ADAS tech, the German firm invited us to show off the systems work before they make it into regular cars that you and I drive every day.
And when the invitation landed on our desks, we headed out to Continental’s facilities at the Taneja Aerospace & Aviation Ltd (TAAL) airstrip on the outskirts of Bangalore to see the tech at work.
Continental showcased quite a few of its Level 2 driver aids and let’s take a look at the major ADAS systems we got to see at work…
1) Adaptive Cruise Control – The adaptive cruise control system works with the help of a radar sensor mounted to the front of the car.
The system uses radar, the powertrain and the electronic brake system to maintain a selected distance away from the car in front of you in your lane at the selected speed.
The system will make adjustments on the fly in case anything changes – another vehicle barges in or the car in front slows or speeds up.
2) Blind Spot Detection – This system uses radar to monitor the blind spots of the car and will send visual alerts to the driver on the external mirror on his side of the car to warn them if any vehicle or person is present in their blind spot.
3) Emergency Brake Assist – The Emergency Brake Assist feature warns drivers if they get too close to the vehicle or person on the road ahead.
In case the driver is unable to slow down, the emergency brake assist system will come into play and will either slow down or bring the car to a complete stop in order to keep those inside as safe as possible.
4) See Through Bonnet – This system uses cameras mounted around the car to give the driver a view of the underneath of the car.
This feature is especially useful to those traversing through hard-to-access off-road paths and to every other Indian dealing with our pockmarked and pothole-infested roads.
5) Lane Keeping Assist – Continental showcased its Lane Keeping assist system that helps keep drivers and their cars in the centre of the lane they are in. This system only works when activated and the driver’s hand remains on the wheel.
6) Rear Cross Traffic Alert – The RCA system monitors traffic behind your vehicle including both cars and pedestrians. The system alerts the driver if any person or vehicle gets too close to them from behind.
Continental also showcased its ARS540 radar module for heavy vehicles at TAAL. Continental showcased the usage of ADAS features like Pedestrian Crossing Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Trailer Management & more on trucks through a host of computer simulations.
The final major component showcased by Continental at the Taneja airfield was its HMI screen tech that allows for projecting high-resolution images on the screen. The colour of the subject in focus changes as part of the gamification process and HMI also allows for 3D image stitching thanks to image mapping.
Thoughts About Continental’s ADAS Sytems
Continental showed off its powerful array of ADAS systems in Bangalore as it looks to get more Indian OEMs to adopt the life-saving tech. While Continental’s ADAS suite in India will start off with alert-based systems, the entire suite will follow at a later date which will mean safer roads if adopted by Indian manufacturers.
