► GTS name tipped for new spider
The new open-top Ferrari 296 spider will be unveiled this month – and we’re expecting the historic GTS name to reappear, accompanying the GTB coupe.
This single teaser image was dropped on Ferrari’s Twitter page this week, revealing the clean lines of a Ferrari spider and the styling of the 296. It is the model that’s been developed under the codename 171 RHT, pointing to the sister car to the 296 GTB.
Our spies earlier caught this prototype out testing near the Maranello HQ, confirming the continued presence of a retractable hard top. It is worth noting that this is what RHT stands for in Ferrari development parlance.
The roof is a continuation of the split hard top from the 458 and 488, where the panel splits one-third, two-thirds and rotates behind the driver’s head.

The tweet does not reference the 296, but the shape closely follows the flanks of the 296, wrapped around its innovative 3.0-litre V6 hybrid, mustering a stout 819bhp at a soaring 8000rpm – enough to propel the coupe to 62mph in just 2.9sec on its way to a top speed rated at ‘205mph+’.

We would expect the convertible to be very slightly down on the GTB, owing to reasons of weight and aerodynamics. No word yet on pricing or timing; it is likely that Brits will wait until early 2023 for deliveries of right-hand drive models, although that could nudge forwards a little as this is not a brand new model, merely a derivative of an existing vehicle.
Stay tuned for the full story after Easter on Tuesday 19 April, when the new Ferrari 296 GTS will be unveiled in full.
