bmw closes 50 years of m with limited-edition bmw 3.0 csl

When

BMW released the XM as their way of celebrating 50 years of the high-performance BMW M brand, some eyebrows were raised

. Well, don’t worry. If the first dedicated BMW M model since the M1 isn’t to your liking, there’s always this: the BMW 3.0 CSL.

Limited to just 50 units worldwide, the BMW 3.0 CSL or Coupe, Sport, Lightweight applies all of BMW M’s racetrack knowledge for an uncompromising sportscar. Though based on the M4, it has been extensively modified with an aggressive aero package along with wider tracks and arches. The 3.0 CSL has an upright double kidney grille with a lattice-shaped insert. Forged alloy wheels with filigree spokes, a gold finish, and a center lock measures 20 inches at the front and 21 inches at the back. Of course, the iconic “Batmobile” rear spoiler continues here, but it’s been modernized to generate additional downforce, especially when taken together with the roof-mounted spoiler.

The BMW 3.0 CSL features the most powerful inline-6 ever used in a road-legal BMW M car. It produces 560 horsepower and 550 Nm of torque. Mated to this engine is a 6-speed manual driving the rear wheels. Though it’s as hardcore as it gets, it does have a shift assistant which uses a connection speed control to ensure slip-free clutch engagement after downshifting when braking for corners.

Added power aside, the BMW 3.0 CSL also adds an adaptive suspension, a revised steering setup, and carbon ceramic disc brakes with 6-piston front calipers.

An extensive weight loss program was achieved thanks to the extensive use of carbon fiber on virtually all bodywork sections including the door panels. It also uses a titanium silencer and extensively cuts down on the sound insultation. It also deletes the rear seats (in its place goes helmet holders), while the front seats are now constructed of carbon fiber as well.

Honoring the race car, the 3.0 CSL will only come in Alpine White with a BMW M stripe livery, both applied largely by hand.

The production of all vehicles will take around three months with each vehicle taking 10 days to complete. Although BMW has yet to reveal the asking price, it is rumored to be around 700,000 euros (P 41.3 million).
