Looking like something that’s just escaped from the set of a Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster, BMW’s futuristic-looking Definition CE 04 electric scooter is officially a concept. But you should be able to whizz, emissions-free, through city streets in something almost identical next year.
When the CE 04 does make it to showrooms it won’t be BMW Motorrad’s first electric scooter. The C Evolution went on sale in 2014, having first been shown as a concept three years earlier. But where the C Evolution sticks to traditional scooter styling conventions, the CE 04 fully embraces a bold, modern look.
That look, previewed back in 2017 on the Concept Link, is partly made possible by the new electric powertrain. BMW hasn’t released much in the way of technical details, but we do know that the flat battery pack below the floor and compact electric motor enabled BMW’s designers to make the scooter much lower than conventional petrol-powered machines.
The seat appears to float over both the motor and an illuminated storage compartment that can swallow a helmet, while the exposed rear wheel appears to riff on the retro-naked machines from the grown-up motorbike world.
But because the CE 04 is aimed at young city-dwellers, and not crusty born-again bikers looking to get their B-road Sunday kicks or go touring, the designers have prioritised accessibility and functionality over long distance comfort.
And for the same reason, connectivity gets a starring role. There’s smartphone integration and a huge 10.25in TFT instrument screen, and BMW has also developed a full riding outfit that offers the protection you expect from traditional motorbike gear but won’t look out of place when you step off the bike and onto the street.
The stylish, if hopelessly impractical, white parka features a wireless phone charging pad built into a pocket and lights in the sleeves to make the rider more visible.
There's no word yet on a likely price, but BMW's scooters are a world away from the battered 50cc machines you rent for your holiday in the Med, so don't expect much change from £15k.
