BMW 2 Series 220i Coupe.
Debuting alongside the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer earlier today were the 220i and M240i xDrive Coupe models.
The 220i and M240i xDrive represent the entry-level and range-topping variants in BMW’s 2 Series Coupe line-up. The former currently starts from $257,888, while the latter is going for $349,888. Both figures are inclusive of COE.
KEEN STYLING
The new second-generation 2 Series Coupe has a classic three-box design. But this time, the surfaces are more sculpted and three-dimensional, and feature more dynamic lines to highlight its purpose as a driver’s car.
The unique kidney grille features active air flaps that automatically open when the engine requires more cooling, but otherwise remain closed for better aerodynamics. A well-defined power dome on the bonnet hints at the performance beneath it.
Other sporty touches include an elongated bonnet, short overhangs, flared wheel arches, along with a short boot lid with a pronounced spoiler lip to highlight the model’s athleticism.
Interestingly, the 2 Series Coupe’s design actually began with the rear end, as the designers cheekily envisioned that it would be what most drivers would see. Here, they added light clusters with three-dimensional sculpting to show off the LED technology.
Buyers can further enhance the 2 Series Coupe by ordering model-specific M Performance Parts from the Genuine BMW Accessory range.
The latest 2 Series Coupe is longer and wider than before, with a length of 4537mm (+105mm) and width of 1838mm (+64mm).
Crucially, however, the Coupe is now 28mm lower at 1390mm, which also lowers the centre of gravity to help improve handling. The longer 2741mm wheelbase (+51mm), coupled with 50:50 weight distribution, should also enhance stability.
The 220i Coupe is fitted with 18-inch wheels, while the M240i xDrive Coupe comes with 19-inch wheels. Both models are equipped with staggered tyre sizes. Larger 20-inch wheels are available from the M Performance Parts range.
BMW 2 SERIES COUPE: DRIVER-FOCUSSED
The 2 Series Coupe has been given a driver-focussed cockpit that features a high centre console and sports seats to create a “cocoon” feel. The two individual rear seats supposedly allow the occupants to enjoy a sporty feel as well.
Interior trim strips in new Dark Graphite matt are standard, while a new style element in the form of trapezoidal accent surfaces feature above the armrests on the doors. The cabin’s ambient lighting also causes the perforated surfaces to be backlit.
Standard upholstery for the 220i Coupe is Sensatec, while the M240i xDrive Coupe is trimmed in Leather Vernasca. An M leather steering wheel, electrically adjustable seats with integral head restraints and an Anthracite headliner are standard in both models.
For improved refinement, the windscreen has acoustic glazing and the climate control system features three zones. The optional sunroof’s glass surface is also 20 percent larger compared to the older model’s.
In terms of practicality, the BMW 2 Series has a boot capacity of 390 litres. Flexibility is provided by the 40:20:40 split-folding rear backrests.
DRIVETRAIN & PERFORMANCE
The 220i Coupe is equipped with a turbocharged 2-litre 4-cylinder engine that produces 184hp and 300Nm. Paired to an 8-speed automatic gearbox, the rear-wheel-drive sports car does zero to 100km/h in 7.5 seconds.
Meanwhile, the M240i xDrive is endowed with BMW’s turbocharged 3-litre straight-6 that delivers 374hp and 500Nm. These figures enable the all-wheel-drive model to accomplish the century sprint in 4.3 seconds. It has more power than – and similar performance to – the first-generation M2.

To aid with handling, BMW took the chassis components from the 4 Series Coupe and adapted them to its smaller sibling. M Sport suspension on the 220i is claimed to bring firmer responses for the lift-related dampers and springs, and includes variable sport steering.
The M240i, on the other hand, is fitted with an M Sport braking system, M Sport differential and adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.
It provides the basis for the model-specific chassis of the all-new BMW M240i xDrive Coupé. The flagship 2 Series Coupé variant also comes as standard with an M Sport braking system, M Sport differential at the rear and adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers.
Like the 2 Series Active Tourer, the 2 Series Coupe models have also been given a broader selection of driver-assistance systems. The standard kit includes front-collision warning, Lane Departure Warning, Rear Collision Prevention and Cruise Control with brake function.
New optional features include the BMW Drive Recorder and Head-Up Display, which projects pertinent information onto the windscreen.
The all-new BMW 2 Series Coupé also gives customers onboard access to a range of advanced digital services, including the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, BMW Digital Key, and Remote Software Upgrades.
