South Africans lucky enough to own the new BMW XM will need to spend at least R5,314 per month on insurance, according to research done by TopAuto.
The XM is the brand’s first M original car 45 years, offering a sporty yet luxurious experience for the price of R3.4 million.
It uses a plugin-hybrid powertrain consisting of a 4.4-litre, TwinPower turbo V8 engine, working in conjunction with a 25.7kWh battery and powerful electric motor.
This gives it a combined output of 480kW and 800Nm, letting the 2.7-tonne SUV race from 0 to 100km/h in a brisk 4.3 seconds.
It also has an electronically-limited top speed of 250km/h, and an electric driving range of 88km at a max speed of 140km/h before needing to be recharged.
An eight-speed automatic transmission is then used to link the drivetrain to an xDrive all-wheel-drive layout, which works in tandem with other high-end features like adaptive suspension, active roll control, and rear-wheel steering.
Standard equipment on the quirky-looking BMW includes a Harman/Kardon surround sound system, four-zone climate control, a heads-up display, M-branded leather Sports seats with heating and ventilation, a model-exclusive leather steering wheel, ambient lighting, a wireless charger, and two curved screens comprised of a 12.3-inch driver’s display and a 14.9-inch infotainment unit.
It also has assistance functions such as a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, cruise control, front-collision warning, lane-departure warning, evasion assist, driver alertness assist, a speed limiter, and blind-spot monitors.
Insurance costs
We used Hippo’s car insurance quote tool to find out what the monthly premiums on the new XM would be.
The calculations were based on an individual living in a metropolitan area like Johannesburg with no claims history who would be able to store their car in a locked garage at night.
The site was able to provide six quotes for the BMW, which were as follows:
Insurer | Monthly payments |
---|---|
Budget | R5,314.39 |
Auto & General | R5,678.04 |
Dial Direct | R5,705.87 |
1st for Women | R5,718.64 |
King Price | R5,840.43 |
Virseker | R6,002.87 |
Note that car insurance is heavily dependent on factors like your age, location, and claims history, meaning your premiums could be higher or lower than this depending on your circumstances and chosen excess.
Hippo also provided the excess for each insurer, which are as follows:
Insurer | Excess claim |
---|---|
King Price | R6,500 |
1st for Women | R21,700 |
Auto & General | R21,700 |
Dial Direct | R21,700 |
Virseker | R21,700 |
Budget | R22,000 |
An excess is the amount that you are required to pay as a client when you are involved in a car accident and make a claim to your insurer. The higher the excess you choose, the lower your monthly insurance payment generally is.
