VW South Africa recorded their highest-ever passenger car market share in 2020 – standing at 21.6%.
The company said 2020 was a challenging year “not just for our brands, but for the motoring industry as a whole.”
“To come out of 2020 still holding onto our leadership of the passenger car market is an incredible feat,” said Mike Glendinning, VWSA Sales and Marketing Director.
The National Association of Automobile Manufacturers of South Africa (NAAMSA) has stated that new vehicles sales in South Africa had a 29.1% decline in 2020 when compared to 2019.
VWSA, as a large market shareholder, was also affected by this and they saw a sales decline of 28.9% year-on-year when compared to 12 months prior.
The Volkswagen “passenger cars” brand showed a total sales figure of 53,319 units last year.
A standout model for the brand is the usual suspect, the locally-manufactured Polo Vivo, and it was VW’s top-selling vehicle with 19,750 units sold in 2020.
It also took the title of South Africa’s best-selling passenger car for the year, according to VW.
The T-Cross was the brand’s best-selling imported vehicle with 5,693 units sold in 2020, and is now second in position in the A0 SUV segment.
The Audi brand, which falls under VW SA, also saw a 0.3% creep up in market share and recorded 5,819 sales during the year – with the Audi Q2 being the best-selling model at 1,131 units.
Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles – a branch of VW which is responsible for vehicles like the Amarok, Caddy, Kombi, Caravelle, Panel Van, and the Crafter – had a total sales figure of 4,344 units and saw a 3.7% market share at the end of 2020.
The Caddy was the best-selling commercial vehicle for 2020 at 1,730 units sold.
2021
VW South Africa will turn 70 years old in August 2021, as the first car rolled off the local production line in Uitenhage in 1951.
2021 will also see the launch of three new models: namely the Golf 8 GTI, the Golf 8 R, and a facelifted Tiguan.
The commercial vehicles brand also kicks off the year with sales of the 190kW Amarok from the first quarter, and new model introductions include the T6.1 Kombi, Crafter Auto, and the 5th generation of the Caddy.
Audi fans can rejoice as a new RS4, RS5, RS6, RS7, RSQ3, RSQ8, and R8 are all due in 2021, along with an all-new A3 model range, and facelifted versions of the Q2 and Q5.
