Audi and Volkswagen are recalling 74,067 SUVs — specifically the Q5, Atlas, and Atlas Cross Sport — for damaged engine connecting rod bearings, as documented on the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) website. If damaged, the connecting rod bearings can potentially lead to engine failure. In the rare occurrence, the engine failure can lead to an oil leak, which can in turn increase the risk of a fire.
The affected vehicles are:
- 2021, 2022, 2023 Audi Q5 and Q5 Sportback
- 2022 and 2023 Volkswagen Atlas
- 2022 and 2023 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport
Owners can take their vehicle to a dealer, where the engine will be inspected. If necessary, the affected engine will be replaced, free of charge.
Affected owners will be notified by mail by the beginning of December. If you suspect your SUV may be one affected by this recall, you can check online by entering your VIN on the NHTSA website. We’ve reached out to Transport Canada to inquire about whether there is an Audi or Volkswagen recall in Canada; we will update this post when we receive confirmation of the potentially affected Canadian vehicles.
You can check online at Transport Canada, using your VIN, to see if your vehicle has been recalled.
