German luxury carmaker Audi has revealed the Urbansphere concept car. The Audi Urbansphere is an all-electric MPV concept that focuses on interior space and technology including level 4 autonomous driving.
The new Audi Urbansphere is the third concept to bear the ‘sphere’ moniker after the Skysphere and Grandsphere concepts. While the Skysphere was an open-top sports car, the Grandsphere previewed the next generation of Audi’s A8 flagship sedan.
Audi Urbansphere Specs & Dimensions
The Audi Urbansphere features an all-wheel-drive setup with a motor on each axle. The motors produce a total of 396bhp and 690Nm of peak torque.
The Audi Urbansphere is based on the German marque’s Premium Platform Electric or PPE setup for electric vehicles. The Urbansphere features an 800V architecture and sports a massive 120kWh battery pack.
The large battery pack gives the Audi Urbansphere concept a range of 750 kilometres on a single charge. The battery pack can charge at speeds of up to 270kWh and can charge from 5 to 80 per cent in less than 25 minutes. Audi claims that just ten minutes of fast charging are enough to raise the battery to a level sufficient to power the car for more than 300 kilometres.
The Audi Urbansphere concept is the largest concept vehicle that the German luxury marque has ever produced. The Audi Urbansphere is 5.51 metres (18 feet) long, 2.01-metres (6.6 feet) wide and 1.78 metres (5.8 feet) tall. The wheelbase of the Audi Urbansphere is 3.40 metres (11.2 feet) long to give passengers sitting inside the most amount of space possible.
The Audi Urbansphere concept features a 5-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle setup at the rear. Both the front and rear axles of the Urbansphere concept are made from aluminium. The Urbansphere concept also features Audi’s adaptive air suspension setup – a single-chamber air suspension system with semi-active damper control.
Audi Urbansphere Concept Design & Features
Audi claims that the Urbansphere Concept has been designed from the inside out. Like its two siblings that bear the sphere name, the new Urbansphere’s interior is the primary focal point of the concept vehicle.
To step inside the Urbansphere concept you’ll have to open the counter-hinged doors (think Rolls-Royce suicide doors). These doors open to reveal that the MPV does not have a b-pillar.
As the doors open, the seats swivel towards the door and a red carpet made from light is projected onto the ground. The Urbansphere features four massive chairs arranged in two rows to give occupants the best of first-class luxury. The rear chairs can recline by up to 60 degrees. Leg rests extend out of these seats for extra comfort.
The Audi Urbansphere concept features a large OLED display that folds down from the headlining to give the passengers at the rear everything needed for either a business meeting or if they want to watch the latest movies or TV shows streaming online. The massive screen also has a split-screen mode. The rear seat centre console also features a water dispenser.
For those sitting at the front, images can be projected onto the wooden trim inlays similar to what was seen on the Grandsphere concept. Underneath these projections sits a sensor bar that allows owners to switch between different functions.
The Urbansphere’s steering wheel can fold away into the dashboard if those at the front require more projection space. This is possible due to the fact that the Audi Urbansphere concept supports Level 4 autonomous driving.
Step outside and glance at the Audi Urbansphere and your eyes will be drawn immediately to the front end of the concept vehicle. Audi’s large blanked off single frame grille seen on the other ‘sphere’ concepts is present on the electric MPV which also sports some rather sleek headlights.
This blanked off section is now a display that blinks in different patterns and colours to communicate with other road users. This is mimicked at the rear which also features an illuminated version of Audi’s iconic multi-ring logo.
The Audi Urbansphere tries to hide its massive size with its sloping roof design and the split window design near the air pillar and roof rails. However, this is in vain as the Audi Urbansphere, which rides on large 24-inch alloys is the largest vehicle that Audi has ever showcased.
Thoughts On The Audi Urbansphere Concept
