Audi owners beware: You could be traveling along the busy highway, thinking you’ve got enough fuel to get you home, but that may not be the case. Audi is recalling 45,879 vehicles in the U.S. due to incorrect gas levels being displayed on the fuel gauge.
While Audi believes that only one per cent of the recalled vehicles will need repairs, the company is issuing a global recall; that means Audi owners worldwide should be cautious of tanks that seem to remain fuller for a longer period of time than usual.
The affected models include:
- 2019 through 2021 A6 sedan
- 2019 through 2021 A7
- 2020 and 2021 A6 Allroad
- 2020 and 2021 S6 sedan
- 2020 and 2021 S7
- 2021 RS6 Avant
- 2021 RS7
Vehicles made after February 2021 are not affected, as a quality check has been implemented by the tank supplier.
The problem was caused by a faulty sensor being placed too close to a ventilation pipe. As a result, the sensor can get stuck on the pipe, making the gauge useless. The fuel gauge and the range estimator can display incorrect numbers. This creates the risk of an accident if the fuel runs out without the driver noticing the incorrect reading. Owners are encouraged to keep an eye on the fuel level, especially if it hasn’t changed for some time, or if the trip computer seems to be reporting unlikely ranges.
Audi owners are asked to take their vehicles to the dealer or service centre where it will be examined to determine if a new ventilation pipe and smaller fuel level sender will need to be installed, free of charge.
Audi USA will begin notifying owners in May. Transport Canada is not currently updated with the recall information, but owners can check recall information online using the VIN.
