In Germany, the Audi Q4 e-tron has been a huge hit. The signatures of the four rings have identified a true flood of orders, resulting in a real overflow situation. A unique situation that will be addressed by moving manufacturing to the Brussels facility beginning next year.
The Audi Q4 e-tron has been on the market for just over six months, and the four-ringed manufacturer is rubbing its hands with the avalanche of orders it is receiving and not being able to fulfill. The electric SUV, as well as its coupe counterpart, are built in Zwickau, Germany, alongside the CUPRA Born, Volkswagen ID.3 and ID.4, the German giant’s home for the manufacturing of the purest sustainable transportation vehicles.
However, there were two difficulties that Audi had overlooked.
One, that the Q4 e-tron was bound to be a commercial success, as were the counterparts based on the same MEB platform used by the other companies with which it shared manufacturing lines. The Zwickau plant utilizes its maximum production capacity, but it is unable to satisfy the huge demand on Audi’s order books.
These are the reasons why the company has opted to increase production by shifting to other brands’ facilities. The Neckarsulm factory, which produces the e-tron GT, offered but was rejected by the German company, which instead assigned itself to the only factory that is truly dedicated to the production of electric cars: the one in Brussels, which produces the e-tron and e-tron Sportback, and to which a second model will be useful, despite the fact that it is also preparing to host the future Q8 e-tron.
Despite the fact that this will be done in a new facility inside the complex, and it is almost inevitable that a substantial portion of the Q4 will be relocated to Belgium, there is still an issue to be handled. That the Board of Directors affirm this decision at its meeting on December 9th, which will include, among other things, the approval of the five-year strategic plan.
This procedure is required for Brussels to carry out the necessary reforms and modify assembly lines for models based on the MEB platform, allowing manufacturing to commence in Belgium in November 2022.
The Q4 e-tron and Q4 Sportback e-tron are the two most cost-effective SUVs in the German brand’s electric lineup.
The former chooses a more traditional design, while the latter goes for a sportier look with a curved roof line. Both are available in a variety of configurations, ranging from 170 to 300 horsepower, rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, and batteries with a maximum range of 341 to 520 kilometers, depending on the WLTP cycle.
