Audi India might produce its electric vehicles in India sooner than later. The German marque is considering the production of electric vehicles in India, and this will give it multiple advantages. The biggest advantage that Audi India will receive comes in terms of the pricing and sales will shoot up as prices will drop drastically.
Audi is one of the bigger brands in India when it comes to the premium and luxury market. The brand has established itself as a prominent manufacturer in several segments, particularly with its small SUVs, and sedans. More recently though, Audi India has come to be known for its luxury EVs.
Electric vehicles are the future and there’s no hiding from it. Automobile manufacturers in recent times have been announcing their timeline to go fully electric. Audi AG announced that it would have a fully-electric lineup as early as 2033.
It is quite obvious that the brand will have no petrol or diesel-powered cars in the next 11 years and this simply means that Audi’s factories across the world will sooner or later have to shift to producing EVs.
Audi India has been producing cars at its Aurangabad facility since 2007. Models like the Audi A4, A6, Q5, and Q7 are produced at this plant. As aforementioned, Audi India is now known for its premium electric vehicles.
In less than a year, Audi India has launched the e-Tron 50, e-Tron 55, e-Tron Sportback 55, e-Tron GT, and RS e-Tron GT. These EVs seem to have contributed significantly to Audi India’s sales numbers as the brand sold 3,293 units in 2021, compared to the 1,639 units in 2020.
Prices start at Rs 1.01 crore for the e-Tron 50 and go all the way up to Rs 2.05 crore, ex-showroom, for the RS e-Tron GT. The only way to reduce these prices and increase the adoption of these EVs is to manufacture them locally. Audi India is also expected to launch more EVs in the coming months and years and hence, the urge to start local production is higher than ever.
According to Balbir Singh Dhillon, Head of Audi India, the company is continuously gauging the EV acceptance in India. With regard to local manufacturing of EVs, he was quoted as saying, “you have to also understand that we have, as Audi India or Audi AG, already decided that by 2033 we will become an all-electric car company. So, it’s a matter of time. It’s a question of when, and not if we will do it.”
Thoughts On Audi India Starting Local Production Of Electric Vehicles
All car manufacturers are heading down electric avenue and it is only a matter of time before everyone turns into green, all-electric car manufacturers. One of the first steps a manufacturer has to take to become an EV maker is to set up an EV manufacturing facility and that is exactly what Audi India will eventually do.
