Crimes like animal cruelty sometimes fly under the radar of the Indian judiciary system but the recently occurred atrocious case of a man deliberately running over a street dog named Lara in Bangalore has proved that crimes against these voiceless creatures will not be treated softly in the country. The police department of Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru stated that the man accused of crushing the street dog with his Audi sedan, Adi Narayana Naidu, was arrested and then released after taking a bond of Rs 10 lakh.
The accused has also been given a severe warning that in future if he tangles in another animal cruelty case then he will be jailed as part of the consequences. The accused is who is the grandson of late former MP DK Adikesavulu Naidu.
The DCP (South) Harish Pande revealed that the culprit Adi Narayana Naidu has been released on the basis of the Rs 10 lakh bond which he mentioned that a bond of such amount is taken from rowdy elements and people who threaten the peace of the society, he further stated, “It is the first such case in the division where such a hefty amount is taken as a bond from the accused in the animal cruelty case. It will create fear among those who indulge in animal cruelty,” The DCP also said that if in case the offender indulges in any future case of animal abuse and cruelty then his bond will be forfeited and he will have to face imprisonment for a period of one year as mentioned in the bond.
The sickening case that occurred on January 26 at 5 PM in Cox Town, East Bengaluru was recorded on a CCTV and the footage was shared on social media, immediately after which a public outrage on all the platforms was seen. The driver, in the footage, could be seen stopping his white Audi near a pack of street dogs and later reversing it, adjusting its wheel towards the left and then running over the street dog which went by the name of Lara. Following this, a case was lodged at Siddapura police in South Bengaluru based on a complaint registered by Badari Prasad Margasahayam, former corporate consultant and animal activist.
He later in an interview commented, “Usually accused persons get away with paying a fine of Rs 200. Since we managed to get complete evidence, the accused was cornered,” He also added, “It was found that previously on Jan 22 at 5 p.m., the accused made an attempt to kill street dogs at the same place where a recent incident occurred with a black SUV. The police were given CCTV footage and evidence. The police have seized the vehicle and taken up a complaint against him,”
The dog Lara’s cremation was conducted at Sumanahalli animal’s crematorium and it was attended by more than 100 people amongst which Kannada actor and politician Ramya was also an attendee. The actress on the incident said, “We couldn’t tolerate this. Laws regarding animals are not strict in our country. The accused pay Rs 50 and come out. Empathy is not only for human beings, it should be there for animals too,” She added, “Firstly, the law has to be strengthened. People with deep pockets will escape from clutches of law. I request the government to strengthen laws in this regard.”
