Huge price tag in Europe for new limited-edition VW Golf R featuring more power, stickier tyres and extra kit
The 2023 Volkswagen Golf R 333 Limited Edition has been unveiled in Germany – a wild limited-run hot hatch with the same high output as the Volkswagen Golf R 20 Years that hits Australia next month.
Restricted to a build of just 333 cars, the new Volkswagen Golf R 333 features an uprated 245kW/420Nm version of the regular R-rated model’s 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine (235kW/400Nm).
As a result, Volkswagen says the Golf R 333 can accelerate from 0-100km/h in just 4.6 seconds, on its way to a 270km/h top speed – enough to claim equal billing with the Golf R 20 Years as the fastest (and most powerful) Golf of all time.
Other features carried over from R 20 Years to 333 include torque vectoring with special ‘vehicle dynamics manager’ and Nurburgring mapping developed for hot-lapping the famed German circuit, where the 20 Years special stopped the clock at 7:47.31min – about four seconds faster than the standard R.
Painted in lurid Lime Yellow metallic paint, the latest special-edition Golf R features black lower door stripes that incorporate ‘333’ graphics.
As standard, the Golf R 333 also includes the R Performance Akropovic titanium rear exhaust and large 19-inch Estoril alloy wheels shod with track-biased tyres.
Inside, there’s a numbered plaque, premium Nappa leather sport seats and a nine-speaker 480W Harman Kardon sound system.
LED Matrix headlights and Volkswagen’s IQ.DRIVE suite of advanced safety tech are both fitted, the latter including adaptive cruise with lane keep assist and a stop-and-go function.
On sale from June 2 in Germany, the new Volkswagen Golf R 333 Limited Edition costs an eye-watering €76,410 ($126,000).
There’s no word yet whether any will be heading Down Under.
