As far as unique selling points go, the upcoming Jaguar electric car has a big one; when it arrives in 2025, it will be the most powerful model the British brand has ever made.
Indeed, with more than 575bhp coming from two electric motors that drive all four wheels, the new model could give the rival Porsche Taycan GTS a run for its money in the 0-62mph sprint. That car can manage it in 3.7sec and gets 590bhp from its electric motors.
It’s not yet known what size of battery the new Jaguar will use, but given its targeted range of around 430 miles between charges (more than rivals including the Audi E-Tron GT and Tesla Model S can manage), it’s expected to be around 100kWh.
Jaguar is also expected to fit its new electric range-topper with ultra-fast charging capabilities, allowing 200 miles of range to be added in just 15 minutes, if you use a suitably powerful charging point.
Based on new underpinnings designed to eventually support a family of new electric cars, the new model’s name is still under wraps, but Jaguar has both the C-Pace and J-Pace names trademarked in Europe. Both titles would fit alongside the existing I-Pace electric SUV.
Jaguar’s only official preview image of the new model gives little away, but our artist’s impression shows how it’s expected to have a low-slung, swept-back look, with razor-thin LED lights, slim cameras in the place of traditional side mirrors, and a thin grille at the front to channel cooling air to the battery. Prototypes of the new model will begin testing on UK roads by the end of this year.
Inside, the new car is expected to offer seats for five and a driver-focussed dashboard, possibly with its infotainment system angled towards the driver like that of the E-Tron GT. Digital instruments will feature, alongside a new generation of Jaguar Land Rover’s infotainment software.
There’s no word on how much luggage you’ll be able to get into the new model’s boot, but officials have said that going electric will allow for more space inside than in the brand’s current offerings.
As well as being the most powerful Jaguar you can buy, the new car will also be the most expensive, with an expected price of more than £100,000. That’s more than you’ll pay for today’s E-tron GT, but it’s still cheaper than the Taycan GTS, which starts at £110,200.
The new model is only one of three new electric cars to come from Jaguar as part of the brand’s reinvention. The other two models will be launched in 2025 and 2026 respectively; both are expected to be SUVs, with a smaller and larger SUV joining the new saloon and the I-Pace. Don’t expect any of the new models to be sold in big numbers, though; officials have said they’re targeting sales of around 50,000 cars per year across the range as a whole.
The timing of these announcements coincides with Jaguar becoming an electric-only brand – a move announced back in 2021. At the time, Jaguar was on the cusp of revealing a new all-electric version of the XJ luxury car, but that model was axed in favour of developing a new generation of electric models.
