Recently a test mule of what can only be a Shelby GT500 in a regular seventh-gen Mustang GT body has been spotted in the usual test mule camo. Here is what we know about the 2024 Shelby GT500.

As the adage goes, “there’s always a bigger fish”. Despite being powered by an athletic V8, the sixth-generation Mustang GT was up-staged by monstrosities like the GT350 (and its GT350 R off-shoot) and the domineering GT500. Shelby’s Ford Mustang GT500 stood at the top of Ford’s performance vehicle pecking order, and that will likely be the case for the seventh-generation Mustang lineup.
This GT500 test mule appears to be clad in a seventh-generation Mustang frame but elements like the wider track allude to the likelihood that this physique is far from what will eventually leave the production line. The front fascia of this test mule features something similar to that of Ford’s Dark Horse model. The rear might see some additions, like the rear wing from the Dark Horse model too.

Aside from the looks, one key element that allowed the GT500 to have such a distinct separation from the sixth-generation Mustang lineup was the unearthly 5,2-litre supercharged cross-plane crank V8 that’s bestowed with 522 kW. Here it trumped the GT’s figures by roughly 190 kW! This was the most powerful street-legal Ford ever built, and the latest rendition of the GT500 will likely seek to surpass its predecessor’s performance figures. Alongside a beefy powertrain, Ford may endow the 2024 GT500 model with a different transmission and drivetrain components similar to the seven-speed DCT and 3,73:1 Torsen limited-slip differential that was introduced in the 2020 GT500.

As was the case with the previous generation GT500, the next iteration will most likely not be sold in South Africa. Currently, there is no official date for the 2024 GT500’s unveiling, but we’ll update once any dates are announced.
